BD is all the schmoozing of a sales job, but you aren’t actually selling anything, just making relationships. Most low level BD people are just professional ass kissers.
The optimal role is where you formulate and execute the strategy and be involved in ops. Then you own the ideation and execution to get the credit you deserve.
Outside looking in they look pretty related — I imagine those responsibilities and roles are often merged at some companies. But ultimately it always pays to be in roles that close deals and can claim credit there, which in my experience BD people do. I’d consider the switch.
Agree - but it does come with a risk of not meeting targets/goals - as a strategy person you can direct traffic without ever worrying about driving
