Every day, we hear companies relocating to Texas or Florida. Since the pandemic began, way more folks have moved to TX, FL, AZ, NV, NC etc Most of these sun belt states have lower cost of living and much better weather. Some of them have no taxes either. Are those in the North-East and West Coast more concerned about woke cultural issues (pronouns, renaming schools, CRT etc), imposing ever increasing higher taxes and being soft on crime? TX, FL seem to be very business friendly which leads to more jobs. TX is now home to the most number of Fortune 500 companies in the US for the first time overtaking both CA & NY. NY, CA, NJ, IL seem to be losing it's tax base. Recently, Boeing, Caterpillar and Citadel moved away from IL, while Tesla, Oracle & HP moved away from CA. Up North, Allianz Bernstein moved away from NY. Blue states are falling behind and haven't responded to the new competitive landscape Edit: I understand LGBTQ, abortion and other cultural issues are something many folks consider.
Simply put, people got priced out. Gentrification on a national level
People try to act like someone WANTS to move to TX just for fun. If you’re moving from a HCOL to a LCOL - it’s because you can’t afford the HCOL. Bc you’re just not talented enough.
Hey no one is stopping you or anyone from working at any major tech company that pays $$$. There’s a ton of open recs always out. It might take time to work your way up there, but if that is your goal, it’s 100% possible.
Companies are just pretending to move to places like TX from CA. Tesla literally just moved a file cabinet with its incorporation docs to Texas to save on taxes but is still planning to expand all its facilities in California. Elon pretends to live in Texas even though everyone sees him in Beverly Hills all the time. 😂
So … you’re telling me that Elon built the largest factory in the world, in TX, just for the lols? Nah, people just realized that CA isn’t worth it with high crime, homelessness, and politicians who don’t care because people will keep voting dem. Have fun when lake mead dries up.
You also going to pretend that TX doesn't have it's own climate problems and droughts?
Imagine moving to florida then having to move back in a few years cuz it went underwater
Imagine moving to California then having to move to a rust belt city you so despise in 10 years because your house keeps getting caught up in wildfires and there is no water anymore
Is CoL really lower when you have to pay $20k/year to send your kids to private schools? Schools in the south are abysmal because they have no tax revenue to improve.
What? Property taxes are extremely high in both TX and FL which directly fund schools. Texas has fantastic universities including Rice and UT.
Texas produces dumbos that are religious af lol
People who couldn't hack it moving out to make room for those who can. They won't be missed.
You sound vastly out of touch. You seem to think the bay has worse weather than arizona. Schools here dont give a damn about pronouns or CRT. They are fcking competitive and difficult because everyone is a tryhard. The northeast has moderate republicans, intelligent people, amazing schools, and seasons beyond “its hot and humid”. Plus, a lot of us who make enough cough 400kTC, care more about lifestyle than taxes and settling down in a texas mcmansion
Unfortunately the GOP controls the worst geographic areas. Weather is too hot and natural hazards more frequent/devastating. The west coast has so many natural advantages but unfortunately they are poisoned by political ideology meant to look well meaning but serving primarily, in practice, to elevate the elite and make them "morally" untouchable. Meanwhile many openly suffer in the streets of the richest cities that only enable and encourage destructive lifestyles. They have the means but choose to let people and institutions rot. They even subjugate ordinary people with contradictory ideological distractions. It's so frustrating and stupid.
AZ has blue senators and voted for Biden. But we still have idiots in the House and other positions (anti-solar and in pockets of energy companies). It's also really hot here in the summer. Housing went from LCOL to MCOL recently, but if you have equity in your HCOL home you could probably sell your HCOL home and buy a home cash here. We see a lot of California plates here for that reason. We won't sink like Florida but water may become an issue in the future unless we can transport it using some huge pipeline from the ocean (desalinate here in AZ using new process without brine waste).
Per usual, everyone is missing the point in the comments. Companies are expanding across the country for many reasons, including more business friendly environments and ability to tap into a wider talent pool. I have noticed that non Bay Area companies, particularly Amazon and Microsoft are more open to having offices around the country. Companies from the Bay believe intelligent people only exist in California. That being said, the majority of innovation does come from the West Coast and North East, depending on the industry. I would be lying if I said Texas can compete with the Bay/Seattle when it comes to tech. But the reality is Texas has a lot of people, and a much more friendly business culture, as well a pool of talented individuals that make it worth to expand there. Not to mention the fact that many people are smart but don’t make enough to survive in California. This has to be the most pompous comment section I have ever read.
This is the right answer. Everyone just reads the headlines, and doesn't ask if these companies are closing down their California offices (which they're not).
Oh yeah better weather in AZ,TX,NV,NC? Lol, stop drinking VC koolaid
Florida and Texas literally have the worst weather. Spoken like a person who’s never been to both places! 😂
