I don’t understand Israel/Jewish problems
- asks Occasio-Cortez. She continues, "At what level are we just living in excess? And what kind of society do we want to live in? And do we want to live in a city where billionaires have their own personal Uber helipads when people are working 80-hour work weeks and can't feed their kids?" Is capitalism in danger? If you (could) vote and there were no better Democratic candidates than the very far left individuals, would you prefer Trump? p.s. Expanding the audience to outside of Microsoft
Nobody earns a billion dollars
Capitalism is not in danger. It's not like socialist or communist countries don't have billionaires. Billionaires disappearing isn't going to fix problems which make great campaign talking points. Pure form or corrupt form of anything is bad. You need a good mix.
Exactly. That’s why things like a 70% marginal tax are great. They incentivize millionaires and billionaires to either invest in their companies/employees, or have the government do it for them.
Have the government do it for them? Ahahhhahhahahahaha. I can’t breathe. Lmfao.
If capitalism is in danger it’s from the influence of big business / money in politics and government. The too-big-to-fail financial institutions and auto-makers get fully socialized protection for their business mistakes, get the benefit of low taxes, and have an inordinate level of influence (almost full control) over regulation.
In US we don’t have capitalism. We have cronyism and corporate welfare
That’s all capitalism.
That’s capitalism my guy.
Capitalism isn’t in danger anymore now than ever - it’s just self-destructive and based around crisis. Capitalism will be in danger when workers organize independently of the two capitalist parties, rebuild rank and file militancy and strikes, and form their own party.
Ellis, presumably, you believe that this plan is workable and that people will be better off. If so, what is the basis for such a belief? Cutting to the chase, increased living standards are primarily a function productivity gains. You can back up 100 years and redistribute everything equally and no one will be living at today's standards. So the next questions are how to increase productivity and in which system does productivity increase more rapidly? If you really want to make a convincing case, I think you need to demonstrate why productivity gains will be achieved more rapidly with your proposed system--which seems a tough row to hoe because all the historical empirical evidence appears to run contrary.
Aww, I think this is concern-trolling but either way it’s v sweet. Increased productivity has gone along with decreased living standards and economic mobility for the last two generations. There is no automatic link between increased productivity (by which you likely mean profitability) and increases in wages. How much of the value created becomes wages and how much goes back to the board and shareholders is not a set rate: it has always been a battle on some level. Finally you are looking at this question technocratically: WHICH rules will ensure x, y, or z? But I’m looking at it democratically: WHO gets to make important decisions fundamental to the functioning of society?
OP check out Post-Capitalism by Paul Mason.
Looks like an interesting book. Thanks for the recommendation.
I’m actually surprised that Gates and Bezos went with 20% ownership instead of 49%. In either case, reasonable that the value they created would put them at $350B of wealth.
In the USA, more money with the government would only mean higher healthcare costs and more expenditure on healthcare. It will create more Doctor millionaires and tax money will change pockets between 1%. Without a control over healthcare costs, any amount of tax won’t even be close enough to help out poor.
?
Yes. Money is the biggest motivator.
