The Washington Post has laid off Pulitzer Prize winner Sarah L. Kaufman, one of the last full-time dance critics in the country, as part of a spate of job eliminations announced this week. https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2022/12/01/sarah-kaufman-laid-off/
Sad. Great writing. she wrote several pieces exploring art and neuroscience. “This is your brain on art” was an immersive video package that considered “Swan Lake” through its effect on a viewer’s brain. Kaufman also interviewed GoldLink, a Grammy-nominated rapper, to explore how the brain was affected by freestyle rap.
What in earth is a dance critic?
It's genuinely sad that a lot of interesting journalism isn't being funded anymore.
Laying off 10 people seems like penny pushing. WaPo has seriously misread the market by axing style and the arts. This content has been doing better than anything else. Soft lifestyle content has allowed the NYT to not crash and burn in past years
Yeah, seems silly to be doing that to only 10 employees. Are they not making money?
Maybe my echo chamber but it feels that articles like Trump/Elon/boogeyman did X sell a lot more than anything else
Cancelled my WaPo subscription years ago. They went woke and agitated for the Redskins name change. Unforgivable from what is supposed to be a local paper. I hope Bezos turns off the lights one day.
The Post has changed substantially since the days of Katharine Graham. It's now just another paper that picks up many stories off the wire service. (I live in the DC metro area and no longer subscribe.)
Bezos don't care about dance
.. nor is he involved in lay offs at the WP
