*currently at Google* I have been offered to join a stressful team in Google (expecting to work up to 60+ hrs weeks) with promo in sight in next year. I'm currently working a few hours a day, chill manager and work, with no pressure at Google with no promo in sight. I'm early in my career. Edit: a lot of WLB choosers. Curious to hear your opinion. Whats the TC delta
OP, how could you leave this out?
No delta since I will only get a bigger raise or promo if I perform well in the new team.
Don’t do it. The promos at Google are not particularly lucrative. Also if you end up burning yourself out before successfully delivering the project, you may not even get that promo.
What would you choose at Apple op?
Apple promo is a little more lucrative because you actually get a special one time 90-100k promo stock grant which they don’t give at Google. But I already got promo a while back at Apple working regular hours and the next level is really hard to get. Personally if I really wanted more money then I would at least first try and interview around to see if I can get a better offer. I know it’s much harder now but I think with the Google brand there’s still some decent places that would interview you and give you a pay boost. Or just sit tight and chill for a bit until things recover.
Google promos aren’t worth it. It’s like the worst company I’ve been at for upward mobility. It’s too much mindless work just to earn moderately more
Just chill. When you get a promo you’ll just be expected to keep that pace or even more.
Not worth it. I’ve seen many broken promises. Could just be wasting time.
Choose according to your priorities. If you hit the gym occasionally, want to have a social life or even have something on the side(be a mentor or something), shouldn’t switch. If you’re a loner and a geek though, go be the Harvey Specter. If I were you, definitely no switch. 60+ hrs is a lotttt, geez
Wrong axis... Are you excited about the work? If so, 60 hrs/wk can feel like 20. Definitely don't do it for promise of promo. Figure out how to get promo where you are instead. You will get a bigger TC bump from jumping ship anyway, which is easier from a good WLB starting point.
I think recent layoffs shed light on why hustling may not matter if things go south for an org. WLB> Edit to your Edit: I chose WLB as I chose Spotify over Amazon about 1.5 years ago
