How much $/year you'd let go for G on your resume for L4? Edit: I grew up obsessing about working at G. Now, I have few offers and the difference between G and the other offer is like 30k per year. I'm still considering G, is this obsession stupid? Curr TC : 200k
200k is L3 band pay so you’re all good for L4
Not comparing with the curr TC. have other offers with 30k diff for L4
New TC?
I left $7k/yr in the table for G, the good part was that stock vests monthly at G compared to every Quarter as the other FAANG I was at. I was also bored at previous company, and so far I’m loving what I’m working on at G 🙌🏼
I compromised on TC but I also really liked the role at G over my other offers. Depending on what your YOE is, picking the best growth potential role might also make more sense
Only adds value if you're non-SWE or considering switching to non-SWE in the future. Laypeople for some reason go gaga when they hear Google. SWEs know about the stories of lowball and far more selective companies.
Well said
Nope. Don't do that. No company's value is bigger than your value. Good part is the other offer you have. Just tell Google that you'll walk away. Let them come back to you sometime next year. That time you can go even higher with your demand because they know that you are not an easy nut to crack.
It depends on overall TC. 30k matters more at 200k than at 400k.
OP, would be more useful to put poll as %TC instead of fixed numbers. $30K is 5% of 600K TC vs 15% of 200K. Anyway, I would compromise ~10-15% for G, but that’s because I haven’t cracked into FAANG yet.
Congrats on the offer. Do you know how many SH/H you got from the onsite interviews. Does it have to be all hires to get L4 offer?
Recruiter didn't tell me exact feedback but they mentioned that i performed really well in all 5 rounds.
To stand out on the resume (I. E.: Get an automatic interview the moment somebody sees your LinkedIn profile) you need one thing to stand out: 1) Top 10 US CS school 2) FAANG 3) FAANG equivalent (Stripe, Uber, etc ...) 4) major achievement in contests (IMO/IOI medal). (Nobody cares about your topcoder profile) 5) some major industry achievement (you have presented at the top ml conferences many times, etc ..). This is more niche and less obvious to many recruiters. Nobody cares if you have 6 of these things. What do you think that will buy you? 6 interview loops at the same company instead of 1? So your real question is not whether Google is worth it. It's whether you have one of these things on your resume already. If not, THEN maybe getting Google will be a good insurance policy. But if you have one or more already, don't compromise comp unless you absolutely love the role.
You need all 6 to get an automatic interview at the highest tier of selective companies like RenTech. In fact having all 6 might not be enough to get noticed unless you have an inside connection.
This is the well thought answer that the OP should be looking at. Good job sPer32. Dont compromise on TC just to get G on your resume if you already have a FAANG job. Maybe if I really love the role at G, I could compromise upto 15 $.
Been at G. It adds no special value than any other FAANG on my resume. Don’t compromise on TC
Can I DM you?
Yes do not compromise
