Just received an offer from Sonos for a TPM role. Considering leaving Apple. They were able to come close to current Apple TC. I know long term Apple comp will continue to grow while Sonos will be relatively flat. Looking for input on Sonos culture & work/life balance to see if the jump would be worth it.
Wait why leave if TC is similar and you expect less income growth at sonos?
For more clarification TC is 245. Reason for leaving would be that Sonos is 100% remote and based on reviews Sonos has a great culture. Also, Apple is not known for work life balance(laughing at the person who asked why you'd ever want to leave Apple). So if I could exit at my same comp, have solid balance, and move to a less expensive region the jump would make sense for me personally.
Sounds totally reasonable. Have you explored other options, though, where you improve both WLB and TC? Those places do exist.
I've looked around but was actually presented this role by their recruiter, so at this point it's kind of a bird in the hand option
Op I won’t leave apple for Sonos. You don’t know if sonos will be around in next 5-10 years. I also got the email from recruiter yesterday.
Bumping this, any Sonos folks out there that can speak to the company 1st hand? Interested in some honest pros/cons
Better WLB after a 6-8 months but can’t compare with job security & stock appreciation at Apple. I understand if remote work is appealing to you, but managing WLB at Apple is a skill like anything else.
I’ve worked at sonos for 4 years as a software engineer & manager. Really nothing but great things to say. We’re growing a lot this year so it’s a great time to join. WLB is very very good, everyone is super nice. I’m remote but use to work at the office, you have the flexibility. I think something like 60% of the company is designated remote. Financially the company is in a really really good place, just take a look at our last 5 earnings reports :) TC: 250k
Thank you, this is the feedback I was looking for!
+1 on the refresh rate. It's pretty lackluster and it's a big reason for my apprehension. It's hard to describe Sonos as a sinking ship though. They have solid financials and they're taking big bets on growth. Plus all analyts projections on stock point to a number that's 20-30% higher then it is today. And where did you get the info on the SVP? Current one has been in place for <1 year so curious about the background you might have.
Also comment on the attrition rate, this exists at Apple in a much worse way. I've seen tons of people leave because they're on teams that demand you work constantly, and if you don't keep up you'll be pip-ed. It's the dark side that a lot of people don't get exposed to unless you know someone who's experienced it. I've seen this on every team I've worked on and on most of the teams adjacent to me during the several years I've been around.
