How bad is it in meta?
I'm currently an SDE (L4) at Amazon. I have been interviewing with other companies and got an offer at Mapbox for SDE (L2 similar to L5 at Amazon). Things are going well at Amazon but I'm also afraid I might be PIPed someday and don't like that pressure on me. Other than that I like to work at Amazon, I learnt a lot during my tenure at Amazon and love things I do (not always thought). I'm also in talks with my manager about my promotion to L5, haven't got a clear answer but my manager has told me to get started with my promo doc. Not a huge difference in TC (getting 20K more at Mapbox) L2 at Mapbox (ie. L5 at Amazon) compared to L4 position at Amazon. Should I switch to Mapbox or stay at Amazon? #tech #Amazon #Mapbox #compensation #
Agreed I felt the pressure even when I was TT my first two years. I really don’t like it and it takes a toll on your health
Considering you are still at Amazon. How did you cope up with that pressure ?
Me? I busted my ass out of fear mostly, with the occasional moments where I said fuck it I’ve been here 2+ years already my resume is made if they fire me they fire me. The funny part is when I was thinking this I was top 10% of everyone in my level. I was still thinking it though. Amazon is the worst place for people with anxiety issues or imposter syndrome. The worst place. I think if you’re a new grad you shouldn’t join amazon because of the culture.
Are you on visa? I’d hold out for something better but that’s just me
Yes, I'm on my H1B visa and my PERM is filled already. So if I switch, I'll lose that and will have to restart the whole process again at Mapbox.
As always, it depends which team you’re interviewing for and who is supporting you in your growth. Mapbox’s levels are frustrating because L3 promotions are seen rarely, so if you’re expecting to get a promotion quickly, it’s unlikely. Breaking it up so you could still share advancement would really help in the frustrations of many team members. If you are not on a team that scales, the company will work you to get out want they want and dump you, so negotiating good pay for that expectation is key in your happiness. So to follow up, push for more money.
I recently spent a brief period of time at mapbox. The unionization effort was devastating to the company. I read some bad reviews before joining, and assumed they were exaggerated, but i should’ve have listened to them. I would strongly recommend against jumping ship and joining. I understand the pressure/anxiety, but With Amazon on your resume, you will potentially have many other opportunities. Mapbox is not where you want to land though.
Thanks for the response.
Mapbox, could you please share more about your experience?
No
No for what ? No for staying at Amazon or No for shifting to Mapbox ?
