I’m not the biggest Google fanboy despite working there, but this blind hate on Google is making me confused. Am I missing something, or are a bunch of people just angry on here? ChatGPT: I’ve used it, and it’s great. But most of *my* searches have a defined output. Address for x, or reviews for y. I dont want use a chatbot for that, and I can easily supplement that exploratory need with a different service (if google doesn’t make one). Also I dont see most people being willing to pay for a chatbot, and sadly ads make the internet free. Support checkins: I see both Googlers and Non googlers complaining about this and equating it to Amazon PIP. Personally, I dont know anyone who has been affected (at least no one has told me, it’s possible it’s hidden). But at least in Search, it seems like it’s not an issue. To be honest, I’d be supportive of a merit based PIP program since we have a lot of coasters. Pay: I’ve received offers from Meta, Lyft, LinkedIn, Apple, Pinterest, Goldman, mid tier Quant research firms, and numerous startups. None are comparable. Meta, lyft, and LinkedIn we’re solid offers (during summer of 2022), but we’re only ~10% pay increase despite me doing allegedly well on the interviews. The QR offers were about 25-30% higher, but openly expected more than 50% increase in my hours (40-60hrs). Which makes no sense since hours *shouldn’t* be an elastic utility. In addition, Apple and the fintechs firms benefits were just worse. Pins was a great offer, but I got weird vibes - the HM basically told me to stay safe at Google. All of those offers were in the the top band according to levels.fyi for L4, so please dont say I did poorly interviewing. Culture: What’s the better option? Everyone is complaining that Google is dying culture wise, but what’s better? I received an offer for MLE from Pinterest, but everything I read indicates the company morale is dying. I ran into someone from the company that claimed they were re-calibrating / down leaving a lot of engineers since they have been paying too much. I am *truly* not a Google fanboy, hell I’ve interviewed at a ton of places to leave. I just haven’t found a better opportunity. Is my situation unique, or are people just whining? If there is a better place, what is it? I do not want a top tier QR role since that’s far to much stress for me. I enjoy my life, and I dont want to grind in my 20s to that extent so please dont just say HRT or Citadel. JaneStreet left me on read, so dont mention them… I’m salty 😂. TC: 315K YOE: 3 ML / SWE
Like it or not we're spoiled at google, I'm also yet to find a place with the pay/benefits as good for the WLB I have here
I was thinking it was along these lines.
Or maybe you're just treated fairly, and other companies should aspire to treat their employees in a similar fashion. Being treated well does not mean that you're spoiled just because other companies aren't doing the same
You haven’t hit your cliff, plus at 3yoe exp hard to get better. Try in 2 yrs when you’re l5 and have hit cliff and everything will make sense.
OP I think you want us to tell you that you are at a great company with the optimal trajectory. But honestly the only way to really find out is to take the risk and jump out of your comfort zone. Either way, you seem to be doing great. So, congratulations on that and the offers you got.
Considering your TC, I would stay as long as possible and become a fanboy because you won't be paid this well in your next companies.
Nope. 315 is the market rate for tech with a couple years experience.
Not any more. It's a lot less. 315k is for people with 10+ years. Welcome to 2023!
You should be able to get LinkedIn to offer more than 10% bump. Are you Bay Area? Senior/L4 offers can be pretty explosive.
Work isn’t great in LinkedIn though , also I heard no refreshers in LinkedIn
There are refreshers. They’re just not standard. They’re intended to keep you from cliffing or to pay you based on how good you are. Work depends on where but def not the most exciting stuff.
I’m a little surprised you couldn’t get a response from Jane Street. My coworkers and I regularly get pinged by their recruiters
It may not be realistic to optimize on every dimension… pick your priorities - comp, benefits, wlb, impact, learning, etc.
How many hours do you work at Google
I work around 40 hrs, but I produce the high number of code on the team. So I could do less.
