databricks vs meta (new grad)?

I was an intern last summer (2022) at databricks and an intern this summer at meta. I got a return offer from meta (the "greatly exceeds" package) and an offer from databricks. I'm a bit conflicted here because I'm sure I'd be getting more (liquid) money from meta, but databricks is looking promising if it IPOs. I also prioritize growth and learning as a new SWE so maybe meta isn't the best place to start out at? But it's also less risky in terms of layoff since they've already shed 20k ppl?

You’ll grow at meta too. As a new grad, don’t expect to be at the same place in a year or two. You *should* be hopping early and often for the TC bump and to see what the industry is like outside of your first job. For this reason I’d go Meta because it’s more TC in hand.

Meta for fast promo

Meta wbroq Oct 30, 2023

Don't listen to this guy. Fast promo comes with fast pip.

You must be really bad to get pipped at E3 and E4. Looks like this metamate is clueless

Databricks just because it’s a 1-2 leagues above meta. Better talent there too

Databricks has slow promo though comparatively. Just anecdotally my meta friends get promo'ed much faster and have much bigger scope after a shorter period of time. Also anecdotally the people I know at Meta are very good.

Meta only promotes s certain group of ppl 😉😉.

Could you tell me what interning at Databricks is like? I am also a new grad going to Nvidia. What is all the hype around Databricks?

I thought GE offer from meta was 250k+

Databricks: slow promo but better talent. All meta alumni I've worked with at databricks are usually brought in with title inflation from meta. E.g., I know at least two ex meta people that we hired as L6 and they are clearly L5.

Hi, based on your experience what is the average time required for l3-l4

Databricks shadyacre Oct 30, 2023

Around 2-2.5 years

JPMorgan Chase -ve Nancy Oct 30, 2023

Well you interned at both companies, what was your experience like? Which did you like more? Learn more? Your experience while interning should also play a factor in your decision

Google EWOt27 Oct 30, 2023

What they're really asking is whether or not it's worth hedging on a company's IPO and while an internship helps, senior engs there will know better

JPMorgan Chase -ve Nancy Oct 30, 2023

Could be, but we won't be able to help. Depends on their situation, like do they plan on making a big purchase like buying a home where the Meta rsu will be way more useful than paper money

Meta isiiwiioo Oct 30, 2023

Databrick. Old fast promotion meta is gone and it’s in a very painful adjusting to belt tightening phase. So all the old things you heard about meta are likely no longer true. That said, meta money is real money and real RSU that can be sold. This economy who knows how databrick would fare in 5 years. Most people in tech never actually lived through a high interest environment

Meta Ityx04 Oct 30, 2023

Listen to this guy, what would make my decisions is there is no guarantee that databricks will ipo anytime soon, and if they are anything like the more recent ipos they can go for less than their pre ipo valuation

How is this even a question - paper money in DB vs holy dollar in Meta?
