do people with MBA’s serve any purpose?

like...any? Trying to understand how they’re more valuable than, say, fertilizer.

Um the present Google and Microsoft ceos both have mbas. MBAs are very much needed in large corporations, once tech matures you will see a lot of mbas here

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

You’re telling me that tech after 45 years—if we’re going by an early-modern tech co like Oracle, founded in 1976—isn’t already mature? Nah. Also, neither of those CEOs needed an MBA to do as well as they do. And they’re technical people. Maybe I just hate non-technical MBAs.

Oracle vAPF84 Dec 6, 2019

Oracle does have a lot of mba people. The current ceo has a JD so she is t exactly technichal. The point is Google/FB have just become mature in the sense of having multiple revenue streams and stable profits. MBA’s teach a lot of valuable skill on how to run buisness which engineering managers/directors dont have Personally I am not good at stuff like that but I still appreciate the skills neeed to do it and that is one reason as tech is maturing I am thinking of moving into other fields like trading where you dont have mba folks because I dont like them, but I can see why they are needed.

aren’t like most execs in fortune 500 companies MBAs from various ellite schools. I wouldn’t outright dismiss them. What do you do btw?

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

Product management. I’m sure those execs would be successful with or without the MBA. I’ve worked with a few who were worthwhile, and far more who just though they were.

"They would have been successful with out an MBA" I always love a hypothesis that can not be rejected. Any debating you is a waste of time. You arent looking for information. You came here for a circle jerk.

They add to the gdp of the US economy through grants of their rich dads.

Middle management needs a lot of fillers. Since the positions don't really require any real training, they've had to artificially increase the hiring bar. The MBA is one of those common filters these days

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

Makes sense.

Google stockmkt Dec 6, 2019

This is a pure example of a group bias. You asked a question for which you wanted to see a response that would align with your viewpoint. Dont be so naive and stupid. If people are not engineers, that does not mean that any training they take is worthless. The sheer arrogance of engineers in bay area is so fucked up.

It seems like everyone who complains about MBAs don’t have one. I’m sure they have their purpose

Oracle vAPF84 Dec 6, 2019

Exactly. I think mbas are very useful when dealing with cross functional team that deal with people customers and so on.

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

Correct. I don’t have one, and I’ve never regretted it.

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

I should clarify and be less of an asshole: I think most MBAs are shit, but the few good MBA’s I know are exceptional and add tons of value.

Cloudera optimis Dec 6, 2019

There are two significant aspects to an MBA: 1) what you learn. What you learn is roughly the same anywhere. An MBA from South Central Louisianna State University has about the same curricula focus as an Ivy league. This knowledge adds a financial component helpful when moving upward. There are comprehensive, free MBA programs online available now 2) who you meet. MBA schools really differentiate by who you meet and thus who you know. Networking is powerful. If you've worked more than 1 job, you give much more credence to, "it's who you know not what you know."

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

This is what’s interesting: much of the value in the MBA seems not tied to any sort of objective standards. Feels squishy. But yeah, I’ve benefitted from networking myself so I get it.

Sounds like someone didn’t get an acceptance letter.

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

What’s your total comp, US Bank guy?

U.S.Bank LkYl04 Dec 6, 2019

I’m on a cap markets desk, so with your down time being in a cost center and not client facing, feel free to google.

Automattic gh0sted Dec 6, 2019

The elite programs get you into powerful networks...

Google stockmkt Dec 6, 2019

MBAs will teach you engineers some skills on how not to be so weird and socially awkward. Its worth it. Jokes aside, I am an engineer and also an MBA from top school and I think the biggest benefit I get is the network of business minded folks that can result in various potential opportunities in future.

Salesforce astro3.0 OP Dec 6, 2019

Maaaaaybe we should look at other ways to curb social awkwardness. Like what can we do in grade school and high school. Hinging crucial social development on a 2yr hiatus with inconsistent academic rigor & standards seems...not ideal.
