8 years at Google. L5 growing into L6 but it seems at least a year away. Management is okay but their focus for career growth has been on another candidate. So started interviewing at Meta and finally got an offer today. Have decided to join them (blind created poll by default after adding current TC 😁) #software #engineering #swe Current TC: 450k New TC: 747k (1st year including sign on), ~750k avg for 4 years assuming MA ratings. Big cliff after 4 year if not promoted. Preparation: Coding: Facebook tagged LC questions (last one year) System design: DDIA (have read 3 times) + Grokking & Alex Xu (to familiarize with different architectures) + read many google internal docs on internal systems architecture (monitoring, ads, billing etc) + Youtube videos (many different types like regular sys design ones and many architecture talks) Behavioral: spent 4-5 days preparing examples for different typical questions (conflict/disagreement/scope/collaboration/mistake etc)
Consider staying at Meta for a year. If that doesn’t work out, come back to Google as L6
Yeah that’s an option.
You need reinterview at g
Dude 750 is huge
Yes. I was expecting 650. Blessed to be in the software engineering domain.
its bigly
Congratulations OP
8 years is too long to wait for a promotion. Google is *so bad* at this stuff. 🙄
Where is it written that they were L5 for 8 years?
Clearly I completely misread the post. Oops. I stand behind Google being terrible at retention, though. I’d certainly still be there otherwise.
How's your WLB at google? On average how many hours per week do you work?
Good. I know it’ll change at Meta.
Your new TC is probably heavily dependent on Meta RSUs, could you give breakdown with base salary? Just thinking now meta gives 400k for ic5.
WLB will be terrible at Meta compared to G, but for that money it might be worth it
Going for the level jump. 💰is secondary factor but def makes the decision easier.
I’m taking meta for lesser money than Google
Did reading DDIA help for system design ?
Yes. Not directly with the question but helps getting in depth of the discussion with confidence
@OP - Did you day-to-day work really prepare you for meta? It sounds like a ton of prep for someone already in big tech. System design interviews seem way too involved for what you might actually do once you are there. It’s like you are interviewing at the L8 level for a L5 position, lol. Congrats on your offer!
How many years as L5? Are you currently a TL ? What is the size of the team ?
3 years at L5. TL, team size has been fluctuating b/w 3 and 12.
What it on the same team ? Hope it went from 3 to 12 that shows the projects scope is increasing. Did you try to go for promo ?
Congrats op. I think you can ask more for sign on. I was offered 105K signon in 2019 at E5. Btw what's your domain? Are you in AI/ML?

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
Wow big jump for this market. Are these numbers after negotiating? Do you know what E6 numbers were like before layoffs started? Could probably try for 700
Don’t “eat” my “tc” 😁. It’s 700+
Typically the sign on doesn’t get counted when TC is discussed
