Does anyone have any experience at this company? It is consistently rated as one of the best companies to work for. Wondering if it is a good place for software engineers. Any thoughts?
I grew up in the area (now living in SF)! Low cost of living for a clean, safe, growing area. Note Cary = suburbia. It's a good place to settle down. I wouldn't live there if you're looking for anything close to city life. Raleigh is probably better (left after high school so can't comment much more) but still a real small city. Growing up, I always heard the founder was a super generous guy who gave back to the community. And that the employees have great benefits/were treated well. I never heard much comment on the work itself. Take this all as "things I was told as a kid/teen." The perks especially could be a relative thing (ie not impressive compared to Bay Area perks)
I grew up in NC. I wouldn't want to live there, but the company has a good reputation. living in suburbia though. and the state isnt politically liberal enough for my personal tastes
Ex SAS but not based at Cary. It is a very academic culture, and environment pleasant. All of the 'great place to work' perks are at HQ so if they are important then that's the place to be but it is more like gym on site, nice cafeteria M&Ms and parkland/sculptures. I left because I was sick of feeling like too many people in the org were coasting, or at least not looking to over-perform. Still privately held (lots of decisions still made by Jim or cadre) and people close to the top have been around a long time, so promotions are quite slow. But guess depends on what you are after.
Nice place to retire
I've met a few people from SAS, and they all seemed happy. But, it is a small sample and you need to factor in the fact that they already decided to settle down in Raleigh and not run after big bucks.
