So I just got back from an optometrist trying to sell me $750 Zeiss progressive lenses. My vision plan covers $350. (I suspect that I also still need to add frames to that first price.) I know Warby Parker does progressives for $295. Then there are other lens options such as Varilux. So what’s my best option here? As someone that is new to glasses, it seems it may be a bad idea to go cheap, but I also hate to overpay and I’m not taking home the big dev $$$ several here make (single income household so I need to be frugal where I can.) So for those that have had glasses for some time, esp progressives, what’s your experience between the likes of Warby Parker, Varilux, and Zeiss (or others). What’s my best value here? Edit: blind tax TC: 245k in HCOL
No experience with Zeiss but keep in mind you prescription will keep changing. A cheaper lens at the correct prescription will be better than Zeiss at an old prescription. Budget for yearly replacements. I just get the standard optometry center lenses with the blue filter.
Thanks for that viewpoint.
I've worn Zeiss lenses since I first needed glasses in 2010. My prescription hasn't changed but a few years back I bought new frames. So 12 years, two pairs of glasses, one prescription. Love the lenses, very worth it to me.
Best value is separate glasses with cheap frames. With progressives, you are paying for convenience.
It’s more useful than just a convenience since it’s difficult to carry two pairs of glasses wherever you may be. At home l, sure it’s a convenience.
It’s definitely a convenience factor since I can read fine without them. The primary purpose is to not take them off when shifting between distance and close up.
Progressive aren’t very useful for adults. Just get a normal lens.
Have you worn progressives before ? Varilux is a really good lens option also. But I’m cheap and wouldn’t pay that much for lenses. Just me. I stick with single vision. But just depends if you feel you’ll benefit from the progressives or not.
I really hate the idea of constantly taking them on and off.
Ya that’s why I’d recommend sticking with single vision. Unless you just need readers etc. someone mentioned lasik have you looked into that? I use to work in the optical field. It’s amazing the markup with lenses. I couldn’t believe it when I found out. Now that I’m out of the field it’s just irritating to know what I’m paying for since I’ve seen the cost on the other side.
Just get LASIK at that point
Zenni. Or even eyeconic if you have vsp
Eyeglass industry in USA is another big scam. This country is on another level. $20 frames are sold for $500.
I only trust my optometrist at Kaiser. Never up sell me any BS.
They also make progressive contacts nowadays. That’s what I would do

I was quoted for $600 in one of the stores. I have been getting for around $120 at Costco with or without insurance.
