I'm a dumazz idyllic mechE major who wants to do "cool sh--" (CS). It seems like much of the CS involves companies combining mechanical, electrical, and software knowledge. I see some people working at neuralink, spaceX, uber atg, anduril, sounds like really CS to me. I've done a significant amount of web dev and not much robotics and other CS. My question is, if I want to break into tech and also do CS is it better to market myself as a frontend web dev and then try to change jobs or learn more C++ and do dumb arduino projects and try to get into companies doing CS? TC: 🥜 obviously
Oh yeah and at the end of the day just apply and see what happens. Try not to apply for embedded systems roles if you only know react, but apply to more full stack and entry level roles where breadth of experience is more important or at least as important as depth. Look for roles where they wanna teach you rather than expect you to know something
Do not do front end web dev stuff. Be more technical, even more mechanical engineering or aerospace if you are hell bent on space x. (And the guy from space x has better input than me on that). Web dev has a reputation, whether it’s deserved or not, on being light on difficulty. You’re not going to get hired at spacex doing that. (Of course it’s always possible just not the easiest route). Get familiar and love c++. That will give you the technical chops to work anywhere
Lol @ real cs
How's your work spaceX lol? I assume your WLB is not great and pay is okay but you do at least some cool stuff?
Pretty much spot on. Honestly at scale once companies start taking off I feel like a lot of the magic is lost and there’s less room for brand new innovation, but it’s definitely better than web dev. I actually did web dev for a year before this role as my only other professional exp. you’re not limited by your current role but how well you can sell it and show your adaptability. Talk about everything in a backend context, do backend side projects, etc etc you know the drill.
