Saw this posting and the TC in the listing seems atrociously low ($97k - 130k salary range) but it seems like a cool opportunity if it paid more. Anyone have any idea what it's like to work in tech for MLB teams? TC: 315k #tech
I haven’t worked for a team, but I’ve been curious and asked some friends who have worked for teams (NFL and MLS too) and what I’ve gathered: • a lot of it varies team by team • lot of fire drills • some teams are very big on high pressure for low stakes initiatives • a lot of what you do doesn’t matter. Your traffic and engagement are more dependent on fan engagement with the on field product than anything done behind the scenes
I feel like baseball is more heavily analytic-driven than the other major sports so I wonder if they have more front-office impact.
Again it will probably vary team to team, but for analytics probably yes MLB and NFL are the most receptive to it. My initial answer came less thinking about that and more to my field (not analytics)
Chris Fonnesbeck(sp?) is the lead core dev behind PyMC3 and has made extensive use of it at the NY Yankees. This isn’t at all relevant to the comment/question, it’s just an anecdote that I find interesting
They can get away with it because everyone and their mother wants to work in sports analytics so they'll settle for lower salaries
My mother and I are fine with the big TC, thanks
So crazy. I guess the teams are forced to spend the lion's share of their money on player contracts and engineers are considered a nice-to-have, guess it could be a cool retirement job down the line.
