Did you know Indians have a racial slur towards white peoples they use all the time?
- Even with much higher earnings down the road SWE may come out ahead due to compounding and no/less debt. Can enjoy youth worrying about impact and diff count rather than med school exams. - Fewer gross sights and smells. - Lower stakes in many scenarios. Less risk of killing someone through negligence (But not all physicians must be neurosurgeons or work in the ICU) - SWE have more opportunity to work on side gigs and strike it rich with startups. - Many foreigners have no other option. - Can work at some of the biggest and famous companies and get cool perks. Well, before you get laid / pip'd. Can work on very cool technologies like generative AI. - More remote work. - Doctors may have long irregular hours but this varies by specialty and it is getting better. Dealing with reimbursement may be tedious. - More freedom for problem solving. Physicians are often limited to standardized procedures / flowcharts to limit malpractice. - - - - Can you maintain $300k TC you had as a 31 year old as a 60 year old if you don't get promoted into the few management or staff slots available? This is why SWE are so concerned about FIRE. Many physicians are working a few hours a week even at age 70 and pulling in 150k-300k. - Medicine is more prestigious and respected. I would be happy to give parents the opportunity to say their child is a Dr. and dating would definitely be easier. - Job may have more meaning. Can see patient get better/happy etc. Can move around and talk to different people. - Must all doctors live in HCOL? Must doctors be engaged in. a bidding war over $2.1M shacks in Santa Clara? - Must doctors always be worrying about 'impact', 'PIP', 'restructuring', 'velocity', 'promotion doc', 'outsourcing', ... ? Sure, there is malpractice risk - but not all doctors are neurosurgeons. - Must doctors always 'upskill' and 'grind' leetcode? Might their knowledge suddenly go to waste with restructuring or new tech innovation? - Knowledge compounds as a physician while SWE knowledge may become redundant at any time. Both must stay on top of their resp fields though. - Job is more routine and can be less stressful. Fewer unknown unknowns. Procedures may be complex and the stakes may be higher, but diagnosis is more about memorization and intuition rather than coming up with a solution from scratch. - There are simply many times more MDs earning 500k+ than SWEs earning the same level. #medschool #tech #swe
Thank you Captain obvious
Why don’t you do what you like to do rather than trying to impress your parents? If you want to be a doctor, go be a doctor. It’s a long road to get there.
As a SWE married to a doctor, SWE is a much better path to take.
How far along are each of you in your careers? It sounds like there’s a reversal towards mid/late career
Ehh is it worth having a better career at 50 if you suffered in every way since you were 22? It's not just comp, there's WLB, there's work stress, there's the job itself. And the day to day job of doctors is worsening as PE buys out hospitals and insurance companies are refusing to actually cover patients.
SWE, you can be anywhere in thw world! Doctor, besides a limited few jobs, you’re stuck to your location?
