What are the odds that people don't go to residential college in 15 years?

Do you think higher education will all move online to Coursera, edX or something along those lines but better? It seems like we have the ability to offer really high quality education at a really low cost but I wonder if residential college will continue out of tradition or something.

There are courses beyond computer science and learning that goes beyond listening to lectures.

^this. I wouldn’t want to be treated by a surgeon who earned their MD on coursera

Good point. We may think we are going to a residential college but actually be in the Metaverse.

i think covid kind of proved that most people are unable to absorb as much from online instruction. Which sucks. But I don’t think on-prem college is going away anytime soon.

On-prem is a luxury good

College was never about learning. That experience will not die, but it can and is becoming more exclusive.

Oracle samiam82 OP Dec 19, 2021

Agree, the learning and coursework part is pretty easy to move online but people may still want the four year party and hang out. If college prices keep going up though, it will be difficult for people to justify spending $300,000 for the on prem when they can get the same education for $30,000 online. It will be an elite thing.

It is also about the connections. The application pools create an automatic ‘human filter’. So most people are comparable. Increases the chances of ‘matchmaking’ and the social skills and networks to be success. Most people outside of CS/Engineering use a very little amount of the knowledge they learn in college, but the social skills and relationships pay off big. The more exclusive the university the more this is true.

I mean college is a joke anyway bc of grade inflation, but the experience is awesome.

If college moves online, I wonder if new communes, collectives will start up in various places where young people all live together and get weird for a few years. WeWork will create WeStudy... or WeDrink. It doesn't take $300,000 to have a good time.

Another angle is - If colleges stick to their guns and just keep raising tuition, avoiding lowering prices with online learning, does college just become a less important institution? Do people do boot camps and LC and certs and apprenticeships, etc and college goes back to being an elite finishing school for rich kids? Basically back to an 1890 conception of college.

I love the idea of education for everybody, I have the fact that they all turned into business and only care about profit, but that is the US

Half the people going there these days is about the party and maybe getting a job. Online doesn't really support that but we will move to a more online world in the future at a certain point. They'll replicate that environment virtually and simply meet up somewhere instead. I think 15 years is believable for this happening
