And y’all wouldn’t believe me. You kids even blind banned me for predicting intel and google layoffs. Really only thing that can stop the continuing slide is the Fed cutting 150 basis points quickly and uninverting the yield curve. And if they do it will just stop the bleed. Boom times aren’t coming back for another generation, ie 20 years.
I’d figure out ways to keep a job and continue to DCA into investing. It’ll be a marathon but in 20 years, you’ll be happy.
Agree…tech workers will need to really grind for the next 20 years and save regularly…like a hungry wolf…lean mean fighting machines…
Don’t panic. Look at the data tracking layoffs in layoffs.fyi or a similar source. January is usually peak layoff month. But layoff numbers in Jan 2024, while serious, are much less bad than they were in Jan 2023, or even in multiple other months in 2023. Meanwhile open job trackers like TrueUp are showing a slow recovery in open jobs. The data shows that things are slowly improving.
We don't know if this is a trend or a coincidence yet. That site only existed since 2020. I never heard anyone use the phrase "layoff season" until this year.

You're next
Now you're being silly. There was the late 1990s dot com boom, the run up to 2008, and the last one, the current decline is more fad chasing, I don't think it will be all that long before the next one, it's certainly not 20 years unless things get really bad for everyone.
you're bringing in less than 400k in W2 income per year, you will be fine
Vote Trump if you want good times again
Also he will kick Rajesh Modi out
I would welcome a 5-7 year slow down. We need fewer new people entering tech. Hopefully, the TC chasers are discouraged from entering this field, and only the enthusiasts actually pursue it
I don’t think it can ever go back to the OG pure nerd days, but returning to pre-2015 days would be nice. Basically most people who never coded for fun OR college shouldn’t have thought about this job except maybe people in adjacent fields (eg Traditional Engineering, Math, etc). While I have no personal problem with bootcampers / leetcoders as a concept, the pure money chasers putting minimum tech effort and trying to “fake it” “shortcut to highest pkg”crowd has been growing exponentially the last ~10 years. Everyone knows when we see one. The good part is some absolute studs who otherwise would’ve never entered the industry did, but they are rare
Company grows by 60k over 2 years but lays off 5k recently. THE SKY IS FALLING AIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE
There were 60k cs graduates in the us 2020. Over 100k in 2021. India graduates over 1 million a year. Being part of a shrinking workforce is always hard, even if that number is small. Add in new graduates and it starts to get really painful fast. People like you only use first order thinking. You are fine and you can’t see past your nose, so others looking ahead and worried seem stupid to you.
No, what I used was basic math. 60k growth at Google during Covid (for example) minus 5k layoffs = 55k net employed. You are babbling about some xenophobia because you are inept and afraid. That’s really it.
Don’t worry, our turn will come in April
If ever …
