Capital one vs. Amazon
Hey so today I received a TDP offer from capital one. I can take 90k in Plano TX or 99k in McLean VA. I have a deadline of 3 weeks but my recruiter said I will be forced to Richmond if I go longer than a week. Next week I should be scheduling onsites for Amazon but it could be a few weeks before I found out of I get an offer. It would be for Seattle btw. Mainly I just want to grow as a recent graduate and am looking for high tech and career development as I start out my career. Any input on my decision would be appreciated. And current TC is 65k in a very low COL area
Onsite to offer takes at least one week most likely 2 but more importantly the chance of you landing it is less than 100% if you are good you can do better than Capital one it is a hot market. If you are ok then you have an offer don't risk it but negotiate and be strong chances are they need you more than you think

Say yes just in case amazon doesn’t work out. If it does ditch capital one if you want to take amazon. People do this all the time.
They do but only to companies you will not want to come back to in the future
That's my fear. I don't want to be a dick to them but I also want or keep my options open
Tell Amazon you have another offer but you really want to interview with Amazon. Ask them if there’s anything they could do to speed up the process.
Don’t tell amazon anything until they give you an offer
Do you think they would care if I accepted and then re-negged?
For what's it's worth Amazon might sound better on resume but capital one is likely to be a better experience for entry levels
I can’t speak to what the associate experience would be at amazon for someone at your level. I can tell you that the capital one TDP program is well-run and provides a great foundation. I frankly was rather jealous of the fact that capital one didn’t have a similar program for associates joining at higher levels for a long time. As far as Capital One locations go, Richmond campus is amazing, but capital one is one of the top employers there so if you leave but want to stay in the same geographic area your options will be more limited than would be the case in McLean or Plano. McLean has had enormous growth over past five years so you may find the opportunities within the company more diverse there. McLean campus is more of an urban experience; Plano more suburb. Traffic in both can suck (Plano seems to be worse in my experience), but McLean you at least have the option of using public transportation.
Plano is a Dallas suburb. Much more opportunities in the DFW area than McLean or Richmond.
More than Richmond, sure - more than McLean, that's debatable. Between the greater DC market & the Dulles Tech corridor, I'd say McLean offers plenty of growth opportunities, both in & out of the firm.
I was in this same situation. I accepted C1, reneged when I got Amazon. I heard the TDP program is great from C1 (obviously), but every single one of my friends who went to it complained about how crappy the teams they got put on were. You can probably argue the same at Amazon, but at least the money there isn't so bad. In terms of growth, I think both companies are pretty good. C1 does a lot of development, but they do all consumer-focusdd development (CRUD Dev basically). Amazon you get to work on almost anything in the entire stack and switching isn't too bad either.
I will say I LOVED the Washington vibe over Bay Area, but that's just my opinion.
Richmond aint so bad. I’d probably choose working there over Plano or even McLean. Amazon will look much better on your resume. Waiting to see how those interviews pan out then defaulting to Richmond isn’t a bad strategy.
You usually find out the decision a few days after the on-site for Amazon
Not always and even so but decision to offer letter and negotiating adds a significant amount of time
