Job market is brutal for SWEs 🥲
I’m interviewing soon for a Sr PM role for Culver City, CA. Is it different from the horror stories I hear about other teams at Amazon? I was hoping it would be different because it's working on movie/TV studio technology but maybe I'm guilty of wishful thinking? #productmanagement #amazon #pm #entertainment TC: 190k YOE: 15
If it’s a project manager role, it’s likely for a position that reports into Albert Chang’s team and if so. I would avoid at all costs. They’re ineffective and have no idea how studios or entertainment works. But if you hate where you’re at—not a bad place to jump to, but be prepared for a lot of frustrating politics and idiocy…
The same horror stories. Amazon Studios is pure politics. Managers are chickens.
How did your interview go OP?
Before I had my second interview, they told me that the roles I was interviewing for were already being filled, but they might get more to open up. Had the interview anyway but didn’t get to interview with the hiring manager as originally planned—and didn’t pass the technical bar although it seemed like a good interview. They’re looking for other roles for me now
Good luck! I hope you get it!
Amazon Studios has a remarkably high reputation. Within the media/entertainment industry, it’s seen as the most prestigious place to be, even beyond Netflix in some quarters. After all they bought freaking MGM. For every job that gets posted, there are so many employees from Disney/Fox/Warner media/NBC/every other shop trying hard to get it. Also within Amazon, it’s very common to see business/strategy/business development folks fighting to get into Amazon Studios. The one place that’s seen as weak within Amazon Studios is their content strategy team. The analysis and recommendations coming out of that team have a reputation to be weak and biased, to pander to leadership whims versus provide any real insights.
Thanks for the insight! Do you know anything about the tech teams there? Studio tech specifically?
The tech teams are apparently not best-in-class according to PMs I’ve spoken to, both in studios and from other parts of the broader company. The other big indication is: look at the user interfaces for Prime Video and IMDb TV (the two Amazon VOD streaming services). IMDb TV doesn’t even have search yet. Plus data internally is not always easy or quick to get to for business stakeholders - not great for a company that focuses on diving deep. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the worst, but from what I hear it’s just not the best. Still, it’s going to better than being at traditional studios or networks.
