Why don’t India and Pakistan like each other? I am white and don’t understand
I’m curious if anyone has any advice on how to get their foot in the door with FAANG companies? Ultimate goal would be Google, but would be happy with any FAANG opportunities. Is it an instant turn off for these companies if you aren’t in the Bay Area etc.? I’m based out of UT. I know these bigger companies tend to dismiss you 99% the time when submitting apps online, and it’s really about who you know. Any tips on how to reach out to recruiters or get referrals would be awesome! I’m terrible at networking :’D YOE: 2.5 Full Stack Software Engineer #software #swe #engineering
Are you cleared? If you have extensive military experience best bet is to find a customer facing cloud role in the public sector. Take it from there
I have secret clearance, but not looking to stay in the government side of things. It may be steady and stable, but equipment sucks, and everything moves at the speed of a dying snail.
I see. Secret wouldn’t be enough for you to land a role anyways
Here's a simple trick. Put one arm slightly out, palm up. Put two fingers, from the opposite hand, on the wrist. Now, if you're quiet, you'll hear a pulsating sound. That's called a pulse, which means an Amazon recruiter is already sending you a message as I type.
Can confirm. 2 reached out within span of 1 month
Screw that... I had to intentionally bomb an amazon interview so they would finally leave me alone. Screw that pip culture.
Google is gonna low ball you anyway, even after all the hard work you put in to get the interview, prepare, and pass. Assuming you get an offer. Most overrated company on here
And no I’m not some salty Google reject, never interviewed there
TBH anything they’d offer would be better than what the AF is paying lol. And It’s more just for personal achievement and resume boosting than anything.
Thank you for your service. Out of 6 offers I got recently, google offer was the 5th highest (only beat Microsoft). Stop putting labels on the companies and interview everywhere. I promise google is just another name. It’s also not about who you know. Tech doesn’t work like this. Location should be fine as long as you are okay with relocating but you gotta give all companies a shot. Please DM. Happy to help someone who worked at U.S. Airforce get great TC (mine is 275/1 yoe)
I appreciate the input! I agree it is indeed just a name, just a big personal goal of mine. Would you mind sharing how you went about getting offers through these bigger names? It may be that my resume just isn’t impressive enough, but in my experience it’s always just a game of networking and who you know… and I SUCK at that game lol.
I promise it’s not about who you know. It’s been a bit tough for me personally. I graduated from bad / small cs school a year ago and failed many interviews and didn’t get a chance at most. After 950 applications I landed 1 offer at Amazon. It was absolutely rough and my focus was just leetcoding all day long to get in. After working there for a year, I have learned a lot about how a great system works and passed ALL of my interviews that I had. My recommendation to you is to try and study as much leetcode and even try a bit of system design! you will absolutely get there with enough practice. Apply to Amazon or DM for referral (I am leaving next week so hurry!). You will be able to get in as SDE-1 and learn a lot, but WLB will suffer. At the time I joined Amazon I solved 230 problems, after another year I had 400 solved . I promise that is the most crucial thing to get far. Don’t worry about google. They suck with low balls and refused to negotiate with me after I showed my offers. My L3 offer was rescinded and recruiter said I can reapply in a year for L4
What’s the skill set at USAF?
Angular, Java, Oracle, SQL. Also have experience with React, ASP.NET/C#
Read a book or take an online course on data structures/algos. And go hard on the leetcode. It takes time. But be patient and it will come.
Any suggestions for where to start reading?
No, they don’t trash and it’s all about skills and applicability
Leetcode and make a good resume. That's about it.
I say referrals from a friend, reaching out to recruiters or coworkers that currently work at google or go through a staffing agency that works with the big tech companies like google, etc
get a referral from blind
