Cleared multiple staff equivalent roles. Got rejected in multiple too. AMA

I have got good help from the community. It is the time to give it back to the community. I have tried different companies at staff and equivalent levels . Cleared some of them. Failed some of them. I could be considered either as lucky to clear them or unfortunate to not clear the others(leaving that unanswered). Alright, so here's the Summary Cleared: Meta (E6). TC split for 4 years (without considering refreshers) : 730/635/635/635. base 240K. sign on 95K for first year. Annual bonus considered at 20%. rest all is equity. Microsoft (L66). TC split for 4 years (without considering refreshers) : 635/635/495/495. Base 225K. sign on bonus of 140K for 2 years. Annual bonus considered at 20%. rest all is equity. Uber(staff, L5b back then). TC split for 4 years (without considering refreshers) : 663/609/501/446. Base 241K, annual bonus : 43K, rest all is equity in 35%->30%->20%->15% for 4 years. Note : I have not yet decided where i want to go. Will post that as soon as i make a decision. I rejected these Google : HC decision was to offer me L5 instead of L6. Databricks: Same. They offered L5. Docusign: Could not offer enough TC. Snap: They were not clear and wanted to have 1 more sys design round. Told them to stop the process. got rejected in these Coinbase : honestly was not in a mood as i already got above offers. But as a feedback, i did not do well in reverse system design round. Stripe : I needed a bigger scope, they could not offer me. Thus rejected in HM round. Twitter : performed bad in system design round. Types of questions: Coding: Overall they all were in LC easy to Med range. did not get any that i felt was Hard. I would say get your coding speed improved, you need to write a lot of code in very small time. Practice practice and practice. System design : got a variety of questions. I believe we cannot crack these just the way we do coding. We actually need a good knowledge, practice and experience for these. Behavioral : Get ready to show the impact and scope at these level in almost every questions. Mentoring skill is a big thing to show for this level. Preparation: Did LC for 2-3 months. solved around 250 problems. Easy/Med/Hard in 25%/65%/rest. System design : grokking and designing data intensive systems are a good read. Bunch of youtube videos I went through in my free time. Current status: L6 at Amazon. been L6 for 3 years. YOE 9. TC : 450 odd Update: I have decided to go with Microsoft. The primary reason for my selection was WLB. I have a 2 month old baby which i would like to spend more time with. So even if i get 1-2 hours extra with him everyday due to better WLB, it is worth it for me. This of course is a personal choice and many of you might disagree. I am ok with that :) #engineering #software #swe

Thanks for sharing your insights . I still wonder if these coding interviews make sense . That’s not how we work!

To be honest in some of the rounds they actually made sense. Not all of course. So i believe it is to the discretion of interviewer or company.

How to prepare for System Design interviews? System design interviews are typical and unpredictable because you can clear it if only your interviewer knows the correct answer

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

I haven't come across any typical ones honestly. They primarily try to evaluate you on your decision making skills per usecase. Trade offs .

Can you share feedback from rejections or interview loops? I think it would help others a lot

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

Haven't i done that already? that is the max i could get from recruiters.

Thank you op. As someone feeling a little lost after 9 yoe this provides some insight at what it takes to prepare for fang level interviews.

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

Best of luck and yes you can do it :)

State Street Corporation 💎 HELLO Apr 16, 2022

Congrats OP! Which one are you going to join? I need referral from you 🐥😊

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

Will post that as soon as i decide.

Congratulations! Can you share more behavioral tips and examples. Would love to see some mock YouTube videos 😉

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

Dont cook up the instances. But it is ok to improvise on actual data points. Considering something delivered even if it is not 😜 If you worked very closely with someone then it is still ok to count some data points from them Bottomline, you should be ready to answer any kind of follow up question for your examples. Be ready to provide good datapoints regarding collaboration, conflict resolution, mentoring etc.

Congratulations which company are u consider the most?

Amazon UmustGTFO OP Apr 16, 2022

MS vs Meta. WLB is my primary factor though. Not looking for faster career growth for few years now.

If you have 9YOE I would say go to Facebook and grind it out for a promotion. You’re still young so why not dial it in early and rest later?

Haven’t I answered this already ?! 🤔 at least the number and difficulty distribution. There is no target. It depends on your timeline.

Hi congrats on your offers! Were most of your coding questions medium difficulty? Thank you in advance.

Medium

At Coinbase, reverse system design is present your own project/design, correct? In what way did you not do well? Did you not pick a good example or not answer questions on how to do things differently? I have a coinbase onsite next month for IC7.
