Is Walmart/Sam's club really that bad?

In interview process with Sams club US right now. Is Sam's club/Walmart in US really that bad? I keep seeing people complaining about WLB, politics, tech, layoffs but when I check LinkedIn, I see people have been working for 4+ years... TC: 80K

You don’t want to work with the people who’ve been there for 4+ years! Imagine an Indian IT firm! Imagine a client who doesn’t know what they want! Imagine that people still have their jobs despite doing nothing.. Do you want to work at such a firm?

"people still haven’t jobs"? EDIT: Rakuten did you mean "still have"? Thats what it looks like

Rakuten BadWolfBay Sep 18, 2021

Yes, edited..

So far from what I’ve heard they don’t really seem to be that great of a place to work I’m not exactly sure what the salary ranges are and they don’t really seem to want to address any technical challenges they have a problem with scale in load

Salary I think is generally lower than FAANG but more than what most non-tech firms will pay you

Walmart j03 Sep 18, 2021

It actually isn't that bad. Am.not sure how it was earlier, as I have been here just for a year now, but the work is good so is pay atleast for lateral entries.Tech upgrades are happening across board and there are a lot of new technologies being used.only complaint from US specifically was about work life balance. 4-7 hr long Stress test during idc hours where most of the app dev need to join might be hard if u dont have idc counterparts. As far as I know walmart doesn't have mandatory pip targets and its rarely used. We did have layoffs driven by strategical shifts like closing of offices in a country etc though.

So WLB not that great. Layoffs were done in US, right? Are you talking about 2020 layoffs?

Walmart j03 Sep 18, 2021

No mostly they closed off Ireland office and some TPMs in a particular US location which was deprioritised were laid off. As far as I know all were given the option to move locations..which I guess is impractical anyways..lost some awesome people.

It’s not that bad everywhere , I’m 5+ and it’s a good place with good internal move if you want new challenge, tc wise, it’s little lower corresponding to current bv market, however few year back tc was good considering bv… they right now need a tc up hike considering the recent cost of living increase

rkbro OP Sep 18, 2021

Okay. I see. Walmart pay will be higher than my current place. Recruiter said my job is BV or Dallas. Going through interview still.

Sam's Club ornD04 Sep 19, 2021

Do you know if they have ever done a tc hike? And if so do they do it for current employees or only new incoming hires?

Walmart whywork! Sep 18, 2021

Depends on what you are looking for right now. The reviews are all over the internet. I joined to take a step back, focus on health and fix my routine. Don't plan to stay for long. If you are growth oriented, forget about this place.

"The reviews are all over the internet" But they are quite mixed. Some say good, some say bad so hard to know... I dont see consistency even with things like WLB.

Walmart whywork! Sep 18, 2021

Exactly. WM is not a place for everyone. You need to know why you want to be here. If you want aggressive growth, want to work on new tech, want freedom in decision making, you won't get it here. There is a lot of office politics and favouritism. So a lot of people don't like it here. Many who stay for more than 4 years don't like it either, but since things are not very aggressive or revolutionary here, you don't have to invest a lot of time at work. Which is a huge plus the way I see it. You don't need to have breakthrough ideas, just get it done the easy patchy route. If you end up in such a team - there are many such - and your expectations are right, you will be here for years.

Sam's Club wait_4_it Sep 18, 2021

It's bad because of the contractors we hire who shit on our codebase. If you join a product team you'll get plenty of opportunities to grow and make an impact and prepare you for your next role. Because of so many young people in the company you can lead projects and grow. In short, come here to make it a stepping stone for your next role.

rkbro OP Sep 18, 2021

LOL. Contractors do not have the best reputation. Walmart is the closest FAANG adjacent offer I have...

Sam's Club almo Sep 19, 2021

I can attest to the Product Team feedback. I’ve been working with the product team based off Dallas, and my experience from my manager to the director was great!

lol.

Rakuten BadWolfBay Sep 19, 2021

Actually, I was overly negative and didn’t meant to be so harsh on them. We join firms and situations based on where are at & if the newer one is better! Rakuten has bad ratings and presumably bad culture but I’ve enjoyed my stint here, great learning & WLB (if you ignore the shite pay). So, join them if they offer you better pay, better growth, better resume value or better life situation.. If the offer is for Dallas or BV, two great LCOL areas that have neighbourhoods with good school districts and good immigrant communities

Lots of managers are boot lickers , who can’t say no to unrealistic deadlines and who like their reports to work on unrealistic deadlines in utter confusion , just for their promotion !!

Walmart whywork! Sep 22, 2021

Absolutely agree. Narcissistic hypocrites, service based managers will sell their souls to anyone promising them promotion at the expense of the team.

Walmart rex345 Sep 22, 2021

Yes, u got it .. the narcissistic managers have already sold their soul at team’s expense for his or her promotion .. these kinds are just nasty .. have been here for years, still don’t know old systems even at a high level .. these kinds are plain dumb but excellent boot lickers !!

Sam's Club almo Sep 29, 2021

Everything depends on: 1. Pay 2. Team 3. Location 4. Manager - most important. I got lucky as a starting QA with a great team and WLB. My manager says, “If you’re done for the day, you’re done. No need to answer or reply back”. That’s a great manager I got.
