hi, i received an offer from flatiron health in nyc for a swe position. ive lived in seattle for the past few years so really dont know what to expect in terms of cost of living, general swe salaries in the nyc area, etc. would love some feedback if this would be considered a good offer or not, esp for a smaller, non FANG company. i really dont have anyother data points to base it off of, having never worked for / applied to a smaller company before. base: 150k signon: 20k relo: 15k on hire stocks: 52,500 / 4 years annual short term incentive: 12% of base in cash annual long term incentive: 20% of base in stock vested over 4 years current TC: ~190k yoe: 2.7 msft thank you ! #offer #career #tech #flatiron #flatironhealth
Let me know if you need help in finding place to live etc. I am on the edge of NJ/NY
Where would you suggest to look for houses in NJ area to commute to city? Budget ~750k
south orange, westfield, scotch plains
Fairly standard E3 offer. Don't know if you can negotiate the short or long term incentive much since those are standard at the company but you might be able to negotiate your base up another 5-10k. It seems like you'd be taking a TC loss by accepting if you factor in taxes though. Keep in mind only 1/4 of the long term vests a year.
thank you this is very helpful! as for your mention of E3, I actually didn’t know the internal terminology for levels. Is that a higher band of software engineer, before senior swe which I am assuming is E4?
Hello @O56cLW Do you know anything about Software development managers, junior position, salaries or total compensation packages? Please break it down for me if you have anything
Wow why is this comp structure so confusing? What does this equate to in terms of annual TC? You could do a lot worse given that 1) it's NYC 2) because of recent times
I honestly haven’t even calculated annual TC... I should do that. Sorry haha. I agree it’s incredibly confusing and very different compared to every other tech company
If your current TC in Seattle is 190k, the equivalent in NYC is about 240k. Then you would expect some raise when changing company so ask for somewhere between 260-270k TC. I think your TC at Flatiron right now is coming at 210k which is a loss from your current TC.
Right. I probably should have clarified. My TC is skewed bc I haven’t fully vested my on hire stock grant, which was very generous. Once that’s done, my TC will drop significantly. Hence why I wouldn’t expect a 260-270k TC in nyc given my current level and yoe, but I agree that the current offer from flatiron comes in lower for this year and 2021. Thank you for your calculations/analysis, it is very helpful!
I have interviewed with basically every high paying company in the NYC area: https://www.teamblind.com/post/7fP5FAQY There are very few companies who would pay 260-270k TC here, you risk them revoking the offer if you were to ask for that with no justification. Still confused about exactly what your Flatiron TC would be. If you're really concerned about it, I would try to get another NYC company offer and have them compete. I legit had a mid 200 TC offer and quite a few places (including Apple) couldn't match.
So without the bonuses and stock, your TC at Flatiron will be around 168k. What's your TC after this stock vesting at MS? Keep in mind NYC is more expensive than Seattle and the taxes will bleed you dry.
After vest TC will be ~140k. Yes I guess I didn’t realize how bad taxes are in nyc, I started to look into it yesterday and now am concerned
In that case then this offer is about even with what you're currently getting at MS. Idk if you want a lateral move financially, but if this will help you career-wise maybe it makes sense to jump. Don't know your situation at MS, so can't comment on that. Also, keep in mind as a new hire you'd probably be one of the first ones to be laid off if Flatiron decides to downsize. I'd be wary making a move in this market if I didn't absolutely have to.
This is great to hear. Thank you!!! Super helpful
seems awful to me to from a company like microsoft to a place like flatiron with an incredibly lame product and going from washington state which has no state income taxes to a state like new york with 9% state income tax i also interviewed at flatiron but for different position. i hated it. feeling was mutual, no offer. they kept talking about "reorganization" and nobody was happy about it.
@op - do you think you can forward my resume to recruiter or your manager at Microsoft? I am looking for opportunity at Microsoft, but not getting interview calls even when I have referrals.
I would but my org is under a hiring freeze :(. I’m not in azure, pretty sure only azure might still be hiring because it’s considered “essential”
Oh okay. Do you know anyone in Azure, who is hiring?
Were you able to negotiate the offer? And if you got in, do you know anything about the levels there?

Try to go up in base till 170k You can live in Nj and take train to NYC. So that you can save a lot of money in living.
oh wow, i don’t know if they’ll be willing to increase that much given my yoe. but thank you, worth a shot
Check it. Because you will find many ppl making above 150k in NYC because of Financial companies.
