Bit of random unsolicited advice. Avoid carrying laptop in a backpack or briefcase over your shoulder. Doesn't feel like you are carrying around much, but over the course of the years, you are damaging your shoulder and spine. Get something you can roll around on the floor to carry that shit around. Don't end up with a fucked up shoulder and vertebrae compression like me
Get a 3lb laptop maybe?
Carry it on the same shoulder for a decade or two, it still does damage.
Don’t be donkeys. Use cloud based development environment and keep dump terminals at office.
I'd rather wear a backpack than try to look super sophisticated wearing a murse for a laptop
What the fuck is a murse? Man purse? Yeah, agree with you there.
Bullshit startups in sf don’t allow people to keep laptops in office. Everyone carries like donkeys.
True. I know so many startups that have been burglarized.
Yup. Happened to us too. Even with building "security"
Grown ups can carry 5lbs backpack no problem. Kids hauling 20lb sacks full of books to school is dumb though, yet they all still do
That's the point. You can short term, long term you will regret it.
Even long term, 5lbs properly in a good backpack is fine. But kids wear those 20lbs with the straps all the way out is really bad even short term. I know I never did because it hurt but some do just to look cool and it's sad.
Appreciate the thought, but maybe instead we can all incorporate some stretching and be mindful of posture during the other 9 hours at our desks. We aren't the first generation of mankind that needed to carry 5-10 pounds for 30-60 minutes a day..
Yeah stretching or yoga is a good idea
Did this in college. Had to take benzodiazepines and opiates to help. New doctors won't give me either. Haven't done it in years but still have the problem
Not even baclofen? Could get it online pretty easily though...
Interesting. I was not aware of this drug
So it sounds like lifting weights is out of the question for all of you?
I am the original poster. I do lift weights. You have the exact thought process that got me into trouble. Just trying to give everyone a warning and food for thought.
Real software engineers carry all their weight around their belly.
Adding more unsolicited advice (for those who travel a lot) that I wish I knew before I turned old. * Get a roller bag. Bigger wheels roll better and pick up less airport floor crap. * If you can afford it, get an airport lounge membership. Trying to crouch to use airport chargers doesn’t work at a certain age (Fuck you O’Hare) * Pack your bag then get rid of half the contents. You’ll survive without it. Pack a credit card instead. You still need to lift that shit into an overhead bin.
If a laptop is causing you to have back/shoulder problems it sounds you are weak as fuck brah. Hit the gym, lift some weights, strengthen that shit.
Strongman over here! Original bonafide deadlifter.
Sounds like your wisdom and strength puts the rest of us to shame. For you, i advise packing as much weight as possible in a backpack, and carrying it on the same shoulder, all the time.
