is it too early for me to be trying to leave? i don’t really think i want to stay and have yet found a team where i feel like i fit in. most of my managers have been abysmal and exude favoritism and the work im doing is bottom barrel grunt work. i want to stay in tech but the pickings are slim when you are early in career but not a new grad. i do t think i have much experience under my belt to say ill apply for more senior told and there aren’t many postings out there for mid level content strategists. anyone have any leeds or advice on how to build my portfolio? i’m about to start cold emailing recruiters on linkedin
You have any recruiter contacts at Microsoft? Been trying to break in there for awhile
It's not too early to jump ship if you feel you're not learning and generally not happy in your current role. My advice would be to try to make a lateral move to another team within Microsoft where work might be a bit more interesting etc. The market is tough at the moment and that might be why you can't find that many positions. I post on LinkedIn articles on content strategy/marketing as this is also my niche. I also attend events and speaking engagements. In all honesty, the best way to build a portfolio is through work experience as this is what recruiters/hiring managers are more interested to see: how did your skills translate into business value for XYZ company/client. My advice would be - if you don't want to stay at microsoft - to do some freelance on the side and try to take on projects you feel passionate about. And ask for referrals here on Blind - people tend to be helpful. Good luck!
I have spent 10+ years working in marketing. What I have concluded is the work you do outside work matters much more than your day job: A. Network at meetups, social events etc B. Start a podcast, social account or something C. Start learning about all things marketing - program management, campaign management, messaging, product etc D. CHOOSE an industry you care about. You can pivot to another later. But have a niche. So, to conclude. Stay if you want, leave if you want to. But don't stop doing other things.
