GitHub vs Microsoft

Assuming pay is roughly equal between two SWE roles, which company would you choose right now (and why)? Are there any major benefits Microsoft employees get that GitHub employees don't, or vice versa, that are worth considering? TC: 150 YOE: 4 #github #microsoft #tech

Github is far more selective and focused, plus has been remote friendly for a long time. Would take GitHub in a heartbeat

GitHub 6ft9GF Mar 25, 2022

GitHub Permanent WFH I would argue better standard of software engineers as we are more selective than Microsoft Better culture and reputation

Thanks for the reply! I definitely think there are big benefits to working somewhere where the majority of employees work remote vs being remote on a mostly remote team.

From your perspective are benefits roughly equal between the two, given that Microsoft is the parent company?

For GitHub: $175/month for mobile phone and internet ($75 at Microsoft unless manager approves higher amount) Max HSA contribution of $3600/yr for individuals or $7,200 for families ($1,000 indviduals/$2500 families at Microsoft) $1,500 home office reimbursement $20,000 lifetime HRA benefit for fertility, infertility, & transgender expenses (fertility/infertility at Microsoft is through Progyny so no specific $$$ max, trans benefits are through medical insurance) 20 weeks paid parental leave for all parents that can be used during child’s first year (12 weeks at Microsoft in the U.S.) Unlimited PTO (set amount of PTO at Microsoft, usually 2-4 weeks) 8 weeks paid family leave, (4 weeks paid family leave @ Microsoft U.S.)

Nike hfkjsn OP Mar 25, 2022

That looks like a pretty substantial difference. Although I did see it looks like there's 20 weeks parental leave at Microsoft if you're the birth parent. I wonder what the culture is around the unlimited PTO for GitHub. I know a lot of places have that and people are rarely allowed to use it, but it keeps the company from having to pay it out when you leave.

Microsoft msftce Mar 25, 2022

Yep I believe it is 20 weeks at Microsoft for birth parents, but GitHub’s applies whether you gave birth or not which is cool. I think with unlimited PTO it may be a bit team/org dependent, but in general people aren’t made to feel bashful about taking PTO based on the hubbers I’ve talked to. True that there’s no payout for PTO if you leave GitHub though.
