Title says it all .My experience in the US has been overwhelmingly negative -Anything slightly related to math is seen as uncool . India is the opposite -being nerdy and smart is seen as a positive . Would love to hear perspectives from people who have lived in Canada /Europe/Australia. No trolling .Im looking to get a genuine perspective from people from all parts of the world .
Being smart is only looked down upon in the US if you are an asshole about it. Do you brag a lot?
Of course not
I think this is a very broad topic and cannot be generalized by country in such a naive way. Outlook towards a certain type of people will vary based on a very large number of parameters.
Only in Trump country. Experts are "elites".
The general consensus in Asian countries is that education = good. But in America, educated folks are just scrawny/fatty nerds who get eaten by dinosaurs while Billy bumpkin saves the hottie by the almighty power of god
Yes this has been my experience as well sadly
You misunderstand. Education doesn’t mean anything here. And it shouldn’t. I’m exaggerating a bit, but the point is what you accomplish matters, not your pieces of paper. Being a high school drop out and starting a business that makes you a million dollars is better than getting a PhD and becoming a prof at some no name school.
I'm Eastern European. We value education very highly and being a nerd is cool, in addition to having other hobbies. When I went to high school (in the US), sure, being a nerd was looked down upon and there wasn't much you could do about it. That changed completely in college (I went to a mid tier UC). Engineering and CS majors were treated like gods, especially if they were a socially competent person who went out to parties/bars and played sports. Nobody wants to hang out with a nerd who only cares about math and wants to talk about coding. People want to hang out with someone who's smart, can discuss intellectual topics, but ALSO is well rounded with an interesting personality. Society probably isn't looking down on you for being smart, it's looking down on you for being a boring person with no personality or interesting hobbies outside of your nerdy interests.
People who think math isn't cool should practice saying "Would you like fries with that".
Till they're replaced with robots
Being smart is not looked down upon, sounding like smartass and being annoying af is tho. Pretty much be attractive, confident and charismatic matter more than showing off your smartness
Not sure who you hang out with but tech and nerds are all the rage in the US.
Only cos of the money.
Knowing or liking math does not make you smart, it means you’re slightly better at pattern recognition. Not making stupid posts like the one you made would make you smart. But that boat has sailed
Math was just an example.Doesnt mean I actually sit and practice math proofs in my free time .And how is this a stupid post? There are certain observations I made which I would like to verify if true or not
You’re full of shit. Math/science/tech is cool in the US now.
Sorry but my experience differs
In what way? What’s an example? “Oh I like math.” “oh you’re a loser?” ?
