Tl;dr An swe intern got yelled at by another team's senior manager for absolutely no fault of the intern. I feel that such behaviour is not at all acceptable. Need blind's opinion on it. Edit: Omg the post blew up! Thanks everyone for the overwhelming support :) More context: This happened in the US at FAANG (Not amazon 😂) My friend is pursuing their first SWE internship as a sophomore. They got alloted a project which involved talking with other teams and their managers. Its been less than a month since they started the internship. Lets call this other team's senior manager X. (X is NOT intern's manager) Now the intern asked X to setup a call well in advance like before 1 week and after 2 follow ups they finally replied and agreed. The intern was told by their manager to setup call with X and get their review on the work. Now, on the call, X started talking very rudely that why are you even showing me all this. I am not here to review your work etc. The intern was like my manager told me to connect with you. X almost eyerolled and sighed and said fine, show me. The intern politely showed and explained the project and what they had done until now. X almost started yelling in a extremely rude tone that what are you doing different here. We already have xyz in place that does all of this. What have you even done new here? Whats the point of this project? Intern explained them how this is different. Even though I believe that how in the freaking world would the intern know what project relevance should be. They were alloted this project, they dont and are not expected to have enough context around this beyond what their team does. Still they did thier research and knew about it. Then the intern told X that I even had a convo with eng on your team and they said to go ahead. X was like how could he do that and yelled that make him join the call, I need to talk to him. He doesn't even know this much etc. When the eng join he was also yelled at in front on the intern. Finally eng explained the entire project. And now X agreed somehow that ohh yeah its okay then. Intern literally explained the exact same thing. There are a couple of points I feel where this is totally unacceptable and toxic. First yelling in general or such rude behaviour is not okay. Second doing this with an intern! Third yelling on your team member in front of the intern from another team. This brought the intern's entire morale down to work on the project, and they were on the verge of breakdown for absolutely 0 fault at their end. And I am 101% it is nothing that the intern said or did that should have triggered X's bad behaviour. I told them that this is not normal and is infact toxic, and you should definitely bring this up with your (intern's) manager during 1:1. Need your guys opinion on it. My TC: 150k Yoe: 1 Friend TC: 7.5k/month Friend Yoe: 0, Sophomore #culture #officelife #rude #toxic #unacceptable
Similar thing happened to me as SWE intern at Goog - PM snapped at me in a meeting in front of everyone because I explained a feature that my manager told me to build. No yelling but loud voice, showed attitude, interrupted presentation, and dismissed with "Whatever". The important thing to take away for the intern is to realize there are tons of dysfunctional teams out there and to choose the right one for the long term. If I was the intern I would say kill them with kindness. Crush it on the project and give them a thanks - they will be buried with guilt for a while and be more cautious with future interns. Intern manager should follow up with HR but are likely too chicken.
Yeah so true. I told them the same thing that its good that during the internship itself you see all the red flags. Will help them make an informed decision whether to join full time or not. And I hope the manager is not a chicken. But mostly will be.
Unacceptable. However there are people that behave like this at every company in every industry.
Loosers with no life treat their jobs as their life
It's always boomer males.
Shouldn’t do anything. High chance of retaliation. Not worth the risk.
Were you there?
No. But I have known this person long enough to trust what they are saying. And why would they lie lol 😂 Its not like they are getting anything out of this. Its just too much for them to take in anyways. Imagine being excited for your first internship and shit like this happens
He's the intern
Intern manager needs to take care of it, so that this less likely to happen again. They should make sure the intern doesn’t feel like they did something wrong. Based on description - intern seemed to manage the situation pretty well. X needs to get feedback with respect to this - supporting interns is an important aspect of company growth and success. We do it because of talent potential, not because of immediate impact. Sometimes you have to take one for the team and calibrate/address inefficiencies later. X sounds like an inexperienced manager. The other thing that should happen is intern manager need to review premise of the project, make sure it’s sound and preempt as many strategic issues as possible, so that intern is able to focus on execution, which is probably what they will be evaluated on for the most part. To answer the question directly: it’s the way it is - it’s not ideal, but nothing on this world is. Everything is a process
Imagine caring this much about work that you yell.
Ikr, we there with the sole purpose of getting paid
I once had a manager who yelled "You're not being respectful!!!!" over teams because I referred him and his coworkers as "you guys". He was a middle aged middle eastern man with a massive ego.
Why so some people care about their job and company so much? I’m just there to fill my hours and get paid and couldn’t give a shit what others do. Never take the job personally
You know what bothers me the most? Is how some people let their jobs become THEIR life. Like chill man, it’s just a job, all of these companies would cut you off as soon as they don’t see your profitable. Why are they dedicating their souls for this….idk that’s just my perspective. This leads to unwanted and rude behavior as shown here. That manager should be fired.
Name and shame the FANG company
Totally unacceptable. Tell X to meet me outside lord Bezos's balls in Seattle. I'll fist him
Fist fight* 🥴
Lmao. This comment will definitely cheer the intern up! Thanks 😂
