I’ve got an interview with them coming up…but I don’t even know why they’re interviewing me. They just laid off another big chunk of people. How is it working there these days? I mean, it can’t be worse than Snapchat, at least. But I am looking to get a sense of how rough it might or might not be.
Run away, it’s burning to the ground
Can you elaborate please? I have an interview scheduled next week as well.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/04/latest-google-layoffs-hit-the-flutter-and-python-groups/ https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-men-who-killed-google/ Good luck doing anything meaningful. Seems the bean counters have taken hold. Company engineering is on life support. All my friends who work there are either freaking out and stressed out of their mind, or leaving for greener pastures. Personally the only experience I have had with the company is with recruiters - and they've been pretty clueless about skill matching. I nope'd out of a possible interview round a couple of years ago because the recruiter was consistently misunderstanding my experience/skills and what I was looking for (I have >25yoe with some specialization). So I'd be careful taking what they say at face value; they're probably just trying to push candidates ahead with minimal effort or care.
Amazing articles. I recommend everyone read those. Thanks for sharing.
Shit sucks in my experience but probably better than Snap. But I’ve never worked there
What companies are most considering?
Depends entirely on what you want to do.
Google is no longer Google. Toxic Amazon leadership took over and all they care for is short term gains at the expense of burning up everybody + tech debt. Oh, and they are bringing their Amazon minions too, so they can be their eyes and ears ..
Man, Google used to be my dream job. When I was still in college Google was considered a huge controversial innovator - they had stuff like Google Glass, YouTube when it was still cool, Waymo in it's early stages, etc. With all that stuff, trading off TC for growth might have been ok. Now all I hear about is Google Cloud which isn't "cool" in any sense. Sure, all of the stuff I listed is still there, but it's definitely more corporate now.
If you ever listen to TGIF, you would realize G is a corporate giant riding on the back of the cool products they once built. They might still build good products (like Amazon) but no one now looks up to Google with a "wow"
Still a top company to work for. And I say this as someone who is leaving.
To show off their interviewing skills
Just do it. See if you can find a food manager who will back you up in case you get in trouble outside of layoffs I'd imagine the culture is still better than snap
No matter what people say, it's still the best place to be. Join if you can pass the interviews
You may be in an isolated pocket. I have friends all over different orgs and do not know anybody under L8 that is happy and looking forward to Googles future. If you are part of leadership you are good, but blind to the mess that bad leadership is creating. Otherwise most people are weighing their options ..
How long do you think it will continue to be the best place in your opinion? We all know it is going down real fast, so just trying to plan my future here :)
I did two stints there, ten years ago and two years ago. The difference between the two in morale, caliber of my colleagues, and overall working environment was staggering. I left (again) right before they started layoffs and my friends who are still there say it’s 10x worse than it was when I left. Steer clear if you have any other options. And if you find a good place, refuse to hire any managers from Amazon or McKinsey…
do you happen to have friends in Meta? is it worse or better than G?
I doubt you will get team matched in 2024
