going to ask for a raise, whats the worst that could happen

my 1 year review comes up soon, i got hired at 50k a year as a network systems engineer, since my hiring i got A+, server+, project+, network+, security+, certifications, got awarded the 3 stackable certs for the security+ and network+ certs, got the windows 10 698 exam before it retired and will have 2 of the 4 of exams needed for my MCSE in core systems.. what do yall think should i ask for? my current comp is exam costs, expenses, and my salary

But have you been doing impactful work? Matters more than certs.

Raise is going to be peanuts, no matter what % it is. Ask for a promotion or find another job at a different company

A promo is no guarantee of a substantial hike.

More peanuts(promo) are better compared to less peanuts(raise)

@amazon I believe I have, At least in my opinion because of how I handled one of our bigger clients I got us a second one about he same size β€” they asked for me specifically at the new one

So bring that up in the review before you ask.

I was planning on it β€” was just kinda shooting a line to see what people thought my certs would be worth by themselves, they were pretty miserable to get

I was kind of thinking about the other company option β€” but I want to at least hold off for my MCSE cert before I start looking, if all goes well I should be prepared to take it end of next month

Asking for a raise during a review is usually way too late. Do it ASAP, preferably months prior...

Asking for raises should be done 6-12 months in advanced. Partner with your HRBP/Generalist on realistic expectations and share with your manager a plan to take on more in your current role. Devise a plan to add value to what you are already doing so that when reviews come up, you can be guaranteed the exceeds rating. Also, note that most β€œraises” align within a specific pay band. If your desired new comp is outside of the band, you really have to put in the time to push yourself out of current band, and into the next level. Note: Most increases fluctuate between 2-6% for performance evals
