In the NFL and other sports leagues it’s always big news when Joe Blow receives a new contract and his salary is made public. Then when it’s time for another player to get paid Larry Moe will not accept anything less than what Joe Blow made (even if he is not as good as Joe) and infact he would often get more than Joe Blow because he was next in line. Then the next player after Larry Moe would do the same thing, thus moving the market in a upwards direction. We are making these companies billions of dollars off our backs, and there is a SHORTAGE of good engineers. Why are we ok with getting pay cuts for WFH, lowballed, down level’d, decreasing or stagnant salaries, Shitty WLB (Amazon) and just accepting It? Why do we think it’s ok for thousandaire individuals to give BILLIONAIRE companies discounts on our services!? My friends! We must start working together if we are going to keep the salaries high, the market moving forward and the work environment good. Make SWE Great Again! Whatever you are smoking is strong stuff!
You’re smoking strong stuff if you’re ok with getting paid 1/10 of the value that you create for a company. Oh you that software you wrote that we sold for millions? Don’t worry about it kid. Here’s your standard salary with a 3-5% raise.
You don't get paid according to the value you create, you get paid in accordance with supply and demand
Technically this already happens with ceos and ctos, regular software engineers are like the assistant coaching staff
Idk why, but Silicon Valley is obsessed with “the mission”. Every single time they offer you less than what you are making or offer you paper money, they always ask you to reconsider your decision because of the mission.
Yo entitled much? We are making the salary of the top 5% in the world. I would have shat my pants if I knew I was making this much when I was a kid. Get some humility back into your life kid. You’re just one of the millions people that can do this job.
Yeah it’s entitled to want to be paid more than a small fraction of the value that I create for a company. One piece of software that you right can generate millions, but you’re ok with just being paid your salary?
Why not start your own business and make The amount you claim to make the company?
You are not that important...get over it.
It’s not about me. It’s about the industry and where it’s going.
I feel like the whole point of this post is that if we all stick together we are that important.
The number of places this could get shared on Reddit is stunning. Just big, big cringey oof.
Share it. The fact that you’re opposed to moving the market forward long term is the cringey oof. You’re brain washed and don’t even realize it.
To stick with the athlete comparison- your Value Above Replacement is most likely negative at this point in your career, meaning your company can find someone as good or better for cheaper, if they wanted to. Sure, you could address that with youthful exuberance and a successful global labor movement, but any resulting costs would either be passed on to the customer or avoided completely through something akin to outsourcing. You're already making truly excellent money for your age (by YOE and TC, guessing 23ish) - relax a little and enjoy the ride. Long way to go, and it isn't ever guaranteed to get better.
I agree. That’s what levels.fyi is doing for salary negotiations.
Yeah levels is good stuff. But it’s not mainstream enough yet. None of my coworkers knew about it (nor blind) when I asked them. They were amazed when I showed them what it was.
Start spreading the good word of our lord, TC
Lmao , it's already happening. It's just that you're not good enough. Gosling joining AWS , Van Rossum joining Microsoft were all pretty big news. 😉
It’s happening but not enough yet. No where did I mention that this post is about me.
The point is it's happening enough. None cares about some 2nd division basketball player. The same applies for the tech industry. Prominent tech people joining companies are always big news ☺
There are 1600 or so NFL players. Most of them are minimum salary players, the top ten percent are the only people who negotiate the way you’re describing. So I guess the top 160 software engineers can do that
That’s short sighted man. It’s the reason why even normal corporate jobs don’t like it when coworkers share salary information. So that way they can keep the market depressed. And besides the minimum value players produce little for the team. But even junior engineers work on features that produce millions of dollars.
“And besides the minimum value players produce little for the team. But even junior engineers work on features that produce millions of dollars.” Dude what. The minimum salary players are the top performers in their field. There are way way more junior engineers. I don’t disagree salary info should be shared to increase bargaining power but the comparison is off

😂 Because NFL only needs 55 players on its roster (max).
Also, NFLs “productive” lifetime is very limited.
