Meta recruiter has been reaching out like crazy so I decided why not!?. Cleared the phone screen and now my interview is on October 20. On Friday my manager asked me to write my work summary for L6 promo at Amazon (Q1, 2024). He wants to do a gap analysis to cover in this quarter. This has put me in a mix where I’ve worked hard to get L6 but Meta position is also E5 (possibly better wlb and pay) YoE: 4.5 (7 if I could put it on paper) Tc: 326k
Where's the third option? Neither.
L7 Sr SDM here. Don’t wait for the promo. You’ll just be bottom of band and after the excitement from the promotion high wears off in 2 weeks, nothing will have changed. Comp, benefits, and wlb are potentially improved with a change to meta. Worst case, you do time in Meta and then boomerang back at a respectable L6 comp for a new 4 year offer. Amazon’s comp and promotion process is not setup to encourage long term commitment to the company.
This is my thought too! My comp for next year won’t change… $390 with current stock price (YoY TT). My main concern is Meta does not have a decent management role at E5 and Amazon is flexible to alow me to try being a manager.
IMO, spend a few years at L6 before considering management. Too many L5 Mgrs at Amazon that never developed the Senior SDE experience to be highly technical in a leadership role. Sounds like you’re on a great path now, so soak up larger scope/more complexity of work that will greatly benefit you in the future when you do make the jump to management. You’ll far outshine those who made the jump too early and the TPM->SDM converts. Best of luck, sounds like a great opportunity either way either you choose though :)
Meta is just as bad as Amazon, not sure why you’d go there of all places. Why not try for a job somewhere decent that doesn’t just churn through people as disposable objects?
Can confirm
Most companies do nowadays
What question was asked in the phone screen?
You won’t get E5
Did you?
Get offer first before then act as everything is the same (work hard for the promo and in your day to day).
Clear the interview first bud
First get an offer
Have you heard of refreshers?
Don't fall for the promo carrot.
