Google offer

Got an offer from Google, but seems they are low balling me. Current offer is 145 base / 15% bonus / 360 rsu - TC 256 No sign on bonus That is already after negotiating (still in progress) Initial offer was 140/15%/ 280 rsu + 20k sign-on - TC231 Location - Sunnyvale This is L5 for app eng. Current TC 230 - all cash. 14 YOE. Jersey City. Don’t have any competing offers, was not looking for new job. google had my CV for about 1.5 years and decided to proceed only now. Pretty comfortable on my current position. Several questions: 1) is there such significant difference in TC bw SWE and AE? Current offer seems to be like high L3 or low L4. 2) HR told that bonus could be more with good performance and that 80% of googlers exceeded expectations this year. How big could bonus be with good performance. 3) what TC could I expect in 2-3 years with good performance. Biggest decision factor for me is that I got an exception to work remotely from Florida keeping (most likely) same compensation. Google numbers can’t beat cost of living there. From other side - this is google. Your thoughts? Update: I am offered L4 position, not L5. I think I was interviewed for L5 (on of interviewers told me that), but after HC had to do another follow up interview. That’s why I think they leveled me as L4. Total comp looks now more in line with what L4 get. New question: HR told me that HC sees a lot of positive sign in fast promotion to next level. How soon it could possibly be for good performer? Update Feb 2019: Goldman raised my total comp to 270 (higher than google offer) and I relocated to Florida. It’s nice, warm and cheap here :)

230k TC, all cash, in Florida, working remotely??? That’s work goals. I wouldn’t go anywhere.

Are you saying you could make 230k in Florida? Why would you want to leave that over anything?

Altera Felxn Nov 2, 2018

For 14 YoE, it seems like a lowball. Did you try to find out why they are offering L5 with this TC ? There may be a rational on why they are leveling you at L5. I would say counter that with what you bring to table. Comp wise it doesn’t seem to be much unless they agree with you being remote. The increase in salary is way short to have same lifestyle in Sunnyvale compared to Florida. With all cash 230k TC, if it was me - I would just be in Florida unless you value google so much on your resume

you plan to move to Sunnyvale with $145k base? Not sure where you are located but FYI rent in Sunnyvale is about $3000 for a 2bedroom apartment (if you’re lucky), and state tax is about 10%...

Listen to the fellow Blinders and go to Florida

Symantec JunkyMunky Nov 2, 2018

Don't come to the Bay. 145k is considered like minimum wage.

Qualcomm TcTcTc Nov 2, 2018

If you dont take the florida job, do you mind referring me to the position? I’d take the $200k in Florida, and drop my current job/life in bay area in a heartbeat

Altera Felxn Nov 2, 2018

Haha, same here ! Seriously - $230k all cash in Florida feels so much better than slogging out in Bay Area

Qualcomm TcTcTc Nov 2, 2018

$230k in Fl is like $500-750k in Bay Area

Goldman Sachs arElend OP Nov 2, 2018

Rent in Jersey City now is 2800 for 1BR, 3800-4200+ for two 2BR

Altera Felxn Nov 2, 2018

For $3k, people live in shitty 1 br in Bay Area - maybe cause I am including downtown. I have lived in jersey city - you can’t compare size of apartments there with apartments in Bay Area . Unless - you value California weather for the difference.

Obviously just work remotely from Florida. That's a dream. Can easily live in a beautiful home by the beach instead of renting a dumpy apt in Sunnyvale
