theres this engineer on my team who’s really stupid and asks bad questions and generally we wonder how she got hired since its obvious she’s kinda bad... been at the company since the beginning (almost a year now), but knows next to nothing about django and react. Has made 3 PRs in 8 months and bs’s her way through doing work by copy pasting off stackoverflow or finding a package/plugin that will “do the job” for her how do i tell the manager that i think shes not good and that i dont want to work with her? i honestly think its better if i just do all the work and she just has zero involvement in it
Please replace the word "ret*rded" in order to avoid offence.
If she’s that bad, then the manager probably already knows
Hang on. If she can copy/paste the right code from stack overflow to solve a problem, that is a job well done. No point to write code that someone else has already got a solution. What do you have against that?
agreed. And using libraries is efficient. I don't know a single decent coder who doesn't use libraries. Why reinvent the wheel?
Obviously, this is the best case scenario right? My point was that she’s not an engineer, but more of a code monkey. What if the package she uses introduces more complexity or a bug in our system? She doesn’t know why nor will she be able to figure out why. Its either we rollback the changes or she introduces even more complexity by putting a band aid on another band aid
If you think that someone on your team needs to improve, you can help them along that path. It’s a great way to demonstrate seniority and business maturity. Quite frankly, I’d rather work with her than you.
I mean...you say that you’d rather work with her but why would you rather work with someone who’s outright lazy and refuses to improve herself? Let me reiterate that she’s had 8 months to learn django and react while other hires have had 3 and are well past her in their understanding of the tech stack. I know its straight up biased and that the post is half me ranting and half asking for a way out of things. But Shes often asking a lot of repeat questions, will claim that X “should be super easy to do” and then when asked how she doesn’t know the answer. Once claimed that she spent a ton of time busting her ass off working OT to finish a feature, and the git commit of said OT session was 5 lines of code. Its astonishing that she’s been able to fake her way through everything so far. I foresee a lot of overhead from working with her since I would be holding her hand through a lot of it, but given our deadlines and fast pace, it feels like theyre just giving her work for the sake of keeping her busy. I just happened to be the unfortunate victim? Has anyone been in a similar situation before? It feels like all the replies assume that my company made correct hiring choices or that everyone works at good companies with 100% competent hires
You sound like a tool, OP. I hope I never have to work with you. You could use some work on your interpersonal skills. I think it will serve you well in your career.
3 PRs is alarming. Hate is a strong word. She needs to improve her technical skills and you need to relax, improve your teamwork and leadership skills. I would pip both of you if you can’t deliver the project from being unable to work together.
I agree, hate is a strong word. I wrote the post pretty immediately after i found out and i was in the moment. I realize it sounds like I hate her cause shes stupid but I don’t hate her ONLY because of her (lack of) technical skills. I “strongly dislike” her because of other reasons but the fact that shes also a negative contribution to our product is like icing on the cake
Copy paste the above; send to bossman
