500 skydives to be comfortable packing, freefalling, landing, and handling emergencies. I had 800 before I tried BASE jumping. A bunch of classic accuracy jumps are also prudent because big F111 seven cell canopy accuracy is very different from landing modern sports parachutes because their glide slope steepens with brake application instead of flattening out. A bunch of BASE jumps off bridges to be comfortable with zero airspeed exits. I had 12 BASE jumps before I started on cliffs where object strikes are an issue, but would recommend more. Maybe a dozen BASE jumps off tall cliffs to get your sub terminal track dialed in. Enough BASE jumps to satisfy the organizers, or jumps with them.
Thanks a lot for the info! Where would you recommend learning skydiving first in the US ? Are the jumps officially logged everytime you do it? By 500, do you mean non tandem jumps ?
I’d recommend learning someplace near your home with a turbine aircraft so you have faster rides to altitude. You maintain a log book and have each jump entry signed by another skydiver. 500 jumps. It doesn’t matter if you include or exclude your tandem first jump and 7 AFF levels.
That is actually an extremely safe and pretty easy jump. Someone who is even remotely decent at tracking and has 15~ BASE jumps could do it. Essentially a beginner BASE jumper. However, the city of Dubai would never let you do it unless you were a pro and had permits. You can’t even skydive over the Palm anymore unless you have 1000 skydives i think now. Not much can go wrong jumping from a building like that where the platform extends out several meters. There’s a lot of room to avoid building strike but in BASE, the most dangerous thing is the human factor. ie; whether to jump or not based on the conditions such as updrafts, wind, thermals, fog etc. You can learn BASE jumping after 200 skydives in the USA at Perrine Bridge. Scotty Bob is the guy to go to. To go from zero to being able to jump off buildings (non wingsuit BASE) is about $25k in training, gear and jumps.
Oh okay, thanks for the info! I'll look at Perrine bridge. How much dedicated time do you need for this training ? Between full time job and living in a different city, is it doable ?
If you have to ask, you are not built for that. I was in the same boat as you. It's not a thing for risk mitigators.
Just jump and give a try
