I’ve been in a few situations now where I’ve led something wholeheartedly and people have flat out taken credit for my work. It’s happened with 3 people now and has awarded them org recognition, promotions, and accolades. I feel like a fool for assuming whenever these individuals tried to gain access it wasn’t for their own selfish motives. I am constantly running myself dry over extra curricular initiatives and org supporting goals outside of my work and do not ever get a thank you. I don’t understand how some people get away with riding the success of others and being lazy snakes who just kiss ass. I hate this place. Word of advice do not trust anyone at Amazon, no one. Moving forward, how can I avoid this situation in the future? Has this happened to you? How do you navigate the blow when you realize everything you did was for no reason? #careeradvice #tech
Speak up. Use slack / meeting / email, CC your manager and who you are supporting. Be gentle but do find words to say that you supported the work in some way (ask in the stand up how did it go, or say how you helped or ask for status whether what you said helped or not). Sometimes let it go, people know that you supported so on so one.
If it happened 3 times then it's your fault not to learn from first 2 times
This was the primary reason I left the company. Sorry it happened to you too but as Meta pointed out above its company culture.
This is the reality everywhere you go, if people know you can be fooled easily, it will happen even more. You have to work in a manner that no one can do this to you. Make sure everyone knows what you are up to. However kiss assy this might feel like, if you don’t raise visibility to your work, someone else will steal. World is not fair. You have to protect yourself.
My name was plastered on everything that was org wide. They (the snakes) removed it and just placed it in their docs for promo or use it for their business reviews so I find out after the fact when kudos are passed around. Problem is their managers are super supportive - mine is not. So I have the vis but work is still not valued because I am not valued. I know I need to just be even more guarded now. Thanks 🙏🏽
No, you have to change team whenever you can. Your manager is not supportive because your skip wanted your coworkers to be promoted over you. You can walk on water but still will not get a promo because of that. Learn the game and to cut loss quickly.
Sorry to hear. Happened to me as well. Got credit stolen by a sociopath then when time came for him to help me he washed his hands of it. If you’re reading this, I hope your kids get cancer, mofo
I'm confused. How do you let this happen? If you truly lead something then you can prove it. If you don't like them taking credit, then speak up.
I’m no op, but in my case our manager didn’t give a shit
Now that you have learned how Amazon rolls, what will you do differently to get what you deserve?
You can not, it’s company culture
You’re right. I’ve been asking myself what MORE can I do but this is the sad reality of the culture here. It’s politics and favorites over the ones who bust their ass every time.
