I really need your advice, input and help. (Maybe as a confidence builder also, read on) I’ve been involved in tech since 1998, quickly went from server management & coding (Perl, php, server management Apache, MySQL, etc) to management which was great early on but I didn’t keep up my programmers skills. Further to this, I went out on my own as an entrepreneur and created some startups, some failed and some had low end exits. I’ve overseen many manufacturing projects, been to China and Asia hundreds of times, have considerable sales skill. Now I find myself newly married and with a little one and my current job eCommerce Director is with a company that the owner isn’t taking anything serious, won’t pull the trigger on any suggestions, the company is barely maintaining and I’m wanting to move on. I don’t have the true programming skills, I can do some JavaScript, php, css, html. Have skills in ecommerce management on Magento, BigCommerce, WooCommerce. Overseeing small teams of of programmers, sales skills and manufacturing experience. My question is, what’s the chances of getting a serious position with a large company that can provide long term stability, large TC package as I’m done working with startups or SMB. Thank you in advance. Lost in transit #Advice #career #careerbuilder #e-commerce #manage #tech
I think you can start by applying to director level jobs and see if u get interviews. I'd just change your resume to focus on your managerial skills. How many people have u managed? If it under 10 at a time, then apply to management roles.
Lyft, qq. I am in a similar role but managing over 10 folks, curious why you mentioned that number and what you recommend for more than 10 people.
I’ve managed larger international teams and had team managers under me, but we are talking over 15 years ago. Would you recommend any certification or courses on EdX, Coursera or other online program?
dont sell yourself short. ive seen ppl with similar background as yours land executive level (director, vp) roles at faang. you shouldn't worry about coding at this level
Thank you, that’s great to hear! My EI levels have grown a lot in the last ten years my concern for the coding is knowing if a programmer isn’t pulling their weight knowing I might not fully know if they are. Is a TC package $250k plus 5 weeks vacation reasonable, thoughts?
dir level at FAANG is at least $1M TC, VP might be $4M plus
What's your target net worth? Curious how much longer you plan on working
My family has a long life expectancy, everyone lives well into their 90’s with very little mental loss. That said, I’m planning on working for at least another 20 years. Also, as mentioned, I have a little one, she’s 1.5 y/o so for me to set an example of working hard is important. I didn’t have parents, so it’s important that I set some example of hard work, always learn, invest, use life for experience, etc.
As for my TC, I would think $250k with 5 weeks vacation is realistic.

for top high techs, u need to study, do minimal leetcode, and know system design well. for management roles they still ask coding (not serious tho), but focus well on system design given your yoe. leadership rounds should be easy for u.
@AfiK76 can you recommend taking some courses on EdX or Coursera or other program/online school?
read how hadoop, spark works, also try out understand how beam/samza works. once you master in their arch, you can watch on youtube system design interviews, you will understand them easily and gain more insight. or you can watch the design interview videos and memorize whats is happening.
