Small fish in big pond or Big fish in small pond?

It’s almost impossible to get promoted at Snap now given the economic environment, but I am still happy with my TC. Essentially I’m a small fish in a big pond with no real hope of getting promo’ed. However I’m wondering if it would be better to get promoted at a smaller firm but take less TC to advance my career. Delta in TC would be 50-75k approximately

Had to make a similar choice. You can guess what I choose

Do you have any ambition to move up into management or a high level IC or would you be happy right where you are into let’s say your 30s?

Elon, why are you working for Google? You could be so much more.

When it comes to maximizing TC, usually go with the greedy algorithm

Snap JySO52 OP Nov 24, 2022

Sure, but what if taking a lower TC now could lead to potentially higher TC in the future?

It more than likely wont

in general, Small fish in big pond for short amount of time would allow your fish to grow since it has space. but being small fish means less stability, you can be eaten up by bigger fishes nearby. Being big fish means you have access to all resources in the local environment. it's going to be relaxing, the only problem is that the pond might become too small for you. another thing, the fish size changes depending on fishes around you. and you can be big fish in tc pond and small fish in physical fitness pond. try to be biggest fish and small fish in at least one of the many ponds you'll be living in at any moment. it'll keep you sane. If you're small fish in all your ponds, you'll die off the stress with no pond to lean on. If you're biggest fish in all the ponds, time will fix that.

Easy there with all that thinking. Snapchat has contributed to the resurgence of psyphilis, which impairs reasoning over time.

I disagree with the TC correspondences. Small ponds have lower TC with more responsibility.

I’m trying to think about future employability and scoring a potential management or high IC role in the future. I feel like staying in my current role, my skills have stagnated. I do think moving into a higher position but for less pay now could pay off in the future once the market gets better

It's just work. If you truly want to be a big fish, build your own company.

I am not good or ambitious enough to do this. I am fortunate I know this and will not delude myself into thinking otherwise at this time. Maybe deep into the future.

This is the answer. I’ve launched 3 apps on my own and was a part of a failed startup. While none have worked out the way I hoped, it only takes one idea to work and your life will change forever. You only live once. Try things on the side and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you gain new skills.

In a box. With some fries and ketchup on the side. Battered with beer preferably

Snap is not a big.pond, it's actually pretty small and has a simple organization hierarchy. As an IC you can improve yourself wherever. Just pick up more work. Snap Is not a place with good engineering, but there are quite a few people there trained elsewhere that you can follow and get advice. If you want to become a manager, and don't see a possibility for that at Snap, either switch to a smaller pond as a manager, or to an actually large pond as an IC and work your way towards it. BTW you seem to be equating a managerial role to a "higher level IC role" . This is not a smart attitude
