15 years age difference, need advice! 🙏
I'm currently late 20s, SWE III SRE at cisco, and despite going to a top school, I was really isolated and didn't make the most of it. I had no good/top internships and my coding skills are not great. Since then (5 years ago), especially after losing a relationship, I've really analyzed my mental health a lot more. I realize I'm the golden child from a narcissistic family system and have had various addictions (mainly video games). Started working on my empathy, getting outside, stopped smoking weed, uninstalled all pc games, and stopped reading internet death cults. All that said, I figure I might give TRYING HARD at software engineering a go before I opt to switch careers. I have ~700k net worth to make this happen with. My goals are to become competent at something, feel stable in being able to support myself in a location (I've got heavy financial anxiety from my parent's money fights and overall low familial wealth), and be a stable person ready for a new relationship. Several years ago I pounded out some backend code in a small startup team and we launched a few products. It was fun, but the TC was like...70k. I then bumped up my TC to the low/mid 100s in my most recent SRE roles, but I'm really not doing much coding at all and pace is slow. I might, for example, write a little bit of terraform or do some operations. My main skills right now are leetcode easy/some medium in python + talking system design or SRE principles, but I've actually never made a CI/CD pipeline lol. I just know you'd want to use something like Jenkins w/spinnaker, deploy to kubernetes, store secrets in Vault, prometheus with alert manager for metrics monitoring, etc... I don't have a fabulous github or anything, but neither do many of my former classmates @ FAANG, including one woman that cheated off of me early in college What would be the play from here if I want to crack a ~200k+ TC backend role? I'd love to just flesh out an API, while bringing some SRE minded-ness to the team. I figure high on the list is leetcoding. I've been making progress on the Blind 75. I've considered the Odin Project, since I know some people use that to get into the industry or recover their career from full on cheating in college. Then I also have books on Golang, Flask development, if I wanted to either up language skills or build a web project. I'm not sure I should dilute leetcoding time though. Part of me wants to leetcode monkey in and then figure it out live. Is this a terrble strategy? Has anyone done this? Lastly, what adjacent careers could I look to switch into before looking at something wildly different (e.g. nursing). I figure PM or operations would be likely. #help #career #mentalhealth #sre #engineering
Seems you can talk! I see you as a PM your top school will make this easy.
Thanks for the feedback, MSFT. What specifially makes you say that? My post or the mere fact that I've survived this long in the industry at my skill level? lol
We as coders can’t sell Ideas with business plans and presentations also we don’t look pretty or cool, and here comes the PM they are superior in talks and selling shit, they make a normal feature appear like invention they can get along with customers and devs. It is not about who is smarter it is about how can you apply your smartness.
