I am up for an internal promotion to a new role/team. It would be a full level bump (specialist to expert). I have never had to negotiate salary internally and am not sure what to expect or how to appropriately ask for more money (if it’s what I feel I’m worth). Especially since they have access to see what I’m currently making. Not that it should make a difference, but I’m a woman in a non-technical role in a technical company so I worry that will hurt me as well. Any advice on how to navigate? Do I have to take their first offer? Thanks in advance! Bay Area Current TC - $130 YOE - 6 Non-technical #Salary #promotions #raise #bayarea #HPE #pm
Did you interview for this new role internally?
Yes, interviewed within the company Only just told my current manager because the hiring manager has asked to reach out I confirmed he would only do that if I was the final applicant
There won't be much room for negotiation I think but try to ask for more money if the first offer is peanuts. If you interviewed successfully you could do that at an other company too for more money, they should also know this. Keep in mind however that there may be other internal and external candidates too for the same position that you don't know about. There must be a salary range for that position, you should try to get some info on that to see what they offer compared to it. It's unlikely they can deviate from that. I went through the same a couple of months ago, interviewed internally for a manager role. I made it clear at the beginning that I expect an offer if I succeed. There were couple of other candidates too but they chose me, I got an offer that I was satisfied with and now I'm here. I'm a woman also. Good luck!
