Current: L5 at Goog, TC 540k I know this sounds insane, but I got an offer to join Olive Garden corporate to lead their new in house ordering system. They are completely revamping their in house experience to have tablets (android) on each table that communicate to the back of the restaurant. I think they are trying to save on wait staff costs. The app sounds kinda cool and thereâs all sorts of real time analytics they want for corporate. Apparently they can save tens of millions with slight optimizations to their food restocking for the restaurants. But again, itâs Olive Garden. I would be leaving (a very boring) android team at Goog for Olive Garden. Iâve been at Goog for about 3 years now and Meta before that. Hereâs the deal, the offer is really good. TC north of $600k ($200k base, 50% bonus, 300k Darden stock each year). Title would be Technical lead and have a team of 5 devs reporting to me. The job is remote so I could theoretically leave CA for a low cost area if I wanted. ## I would be reporting to an old ex GOOG friend who runs all their in house dev. Heâs the reason they are considering me so strongly (and frankly the only reason I would consider OG) So am I crazy for considering this? Edit: my dad is a doctor and my brother is a doctor and both of them are openly mocking me for considering being a glorified bus boy in their opinion. At least at Google my dad proudly speaks about me.
Yes
Not crazy. Good TC , impactful work, positive existing relationship with manager. You've got Google and Meta on your resume already. You can do whatever you want at this point and still be marketable
How is this impactful work? I am peddling unlimited salads with an unhealthy amount of breadsticks
Impactful in terms of building out new systems. I mean we're all just peddling shit for our overlords, what's wrong with breadsticks?
đĽ
This is what Iâm afraid of. People are just going to litter up my LinkedIn with breadsticks and salads
You give Gingerbread, Froyo, Lollipop, Donut, Honeycomb, Jellybean, Kitkat etc to those primitive minds. PS: If this excites you, go for it. You can always move back to FAANG
One possible solution: ask your friend to resign and start a startup for this menu work, and provide Olive Garden as a service.. You can join as a founding eng and the product sounds to have more room to grow.. Ok it is a joke.. but I do see people in my company did this, and the company is paying them less for the same work they do in the company, but they can try to sell it to other places.
If they wanted that wouldn't they just pay for Toast? Or any of the other existing solutions.
Iâm joining Wendyâs for 800k as senior technical French fry engineer
Lmao this is great đ
What ??? Olive Garden is paying their lead engineer $600k+ ????
Yeah seems ridiculous to me too.
Ex Goog mgr (who made me the offer) is pulling in more. We all thought he was crazy going to Olive Garden, but apparently last year he cleared $1M with the stock
Itâs Darden Hospitality. Just tell people that. Donât mention the breadsticks. I mean, $60k is a nice raise.
Thatâs fine for friends or LinkedIn. But my parents already know itâs Olive Garden. My dad said he didnât leave India so I could be a bus boy and my mom wonât stop crying when I told her I was seriously considering it. I donât get why they are being so mean. They eat there all the time
Would your dad say the same thing if you were CTO of Darden Hosp? VP? Director of Eng!? Whereâs the line? After this stint you and your manager can go create a commercial product of this as a startup.
if this is serious, go for it. your resume is great and youâll easily get a new job if youâd like to leave.
the meme potential is unlimited. We could be seeing the birth of a new âalbertsonsâ right here and now. Begone JS, HRT, databricks, Olive Garden is the new dream company.
No, great offer. Go for it. Make sure not to burn bridges so you can come back later. Iâm in similar dilemma btw. Check out this post! "Startup offer L6 equivalent â advice needed (Tech Industry)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/J0uoZvPj
