I’m so sick of working at Medtronic. My leadership and director sucks! It’s literally just two of us left on the team. Everything is TBD. There is no upward mobility of any growth period. No direction or support for any new project. Hell there are no new projects!! Constant fear of lay-offs. I want to leave but I got a sign on bonus which I have to pay back if I leave before 2 years which I’ll complete in September of 2023 😩. So I’m suppose to be rotting here in this uncertain situation either keep being stagnant or wait for them to layoff cuz if I leave I’ll have to pay that 10K bonus back as stated in my contract. What should I do? TC : 105K
Look for a new role. If the new comp is higher, it should offset the lost bonus. 2 years? I've heard of one year, but two seems excessive.
Wow, sorry to hear. That’s funny because I am desperately trying to apply for a marketing director role within the diabetes group @ Medtronic! Is it really that bad? Would you advise against it?
Ok so I don’t work for diabetes OU but I know diabetes performance wasn’t that great. In fact it was the worst of all other operating units. I did see internally some new roles in diabetes but I also hear rumors that there are going to be more layoffs there or they are going to sell that whole business lol i would def advised against it but I’m tired of Medtronic in general lol if you were to apply I would say look for roles in surgical.
You can prep to interview and see if you land a better job before then. If you are really unhappy, and are certain you can’t change anything with your current circumstance. Prep and interview since I would think a new sign on bonus would be > 10k and you’ll be much happier at a new job. Just keep in mind sometimes you could be in the same situation at the new job.
Thank you and you are right.
September is less than 6 months away. Stop worrying about work. Start coasting and looking for a new job. If you get laid off, collect your severance and unemployment. Medtronic won’t force you to repay the bonus, if they tell you to leave.
I know I heard severance for someone for me would be like 2 weeks. But you are right, Im looking into other roles outside Medtronic.. appreciate the advice.
I haven’t worked for Medtronic for a few years. At the time, the minimum severance was 4 weeks. Plus, the 8 weeks of WARN notice (WARN is a gov’t requirement, so that cannot change.) Good luck to you!
Start looking for new opps. If you leave before Sept, you would only owe a prorated amount, not the full $10K.
Are you sure? The contract states clearly I would have to return 10K and I think someone in a different post stated Medtronic doesn’t do pro rated. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.
Sorry, not 100% sure, but if that’s what contract states, that sucks! I have signed a few in the past and usually it’s 12 months and prorated if I leave early.
Put in minimum effort to get the equivalent of meets expectations. Start upskilling and prepping hard for interviews. Be in top shape when August rolls around and you’re ready to interview. In the meantime do some steady state networking to improve your opportunity acquisition funnel. Most importantly, find your balance and compartmentalize your dissatisfaction to this job/role, don’t carry it into your next opportunity. Best of luck!
There is a slim chance you may be able to fly under the radar and not need to pay back the bonus if you left before your two year mark. (Speaking for experience) Also I agree switch everyone else. Start applying asap
If you see anything on Baxter’s website (doubtful, we’re on a hiring freeze, other than critical roles), feel free to DM me.
I'm at Medtronic too (I'm still using my old company for blind). I'm tired how there is no direction. I consider myself an honest worker, but there is too much politics. Everyone wants to extend the timelines as much as possible. Also everything is vague, I can't understand the intentions.
I totally understand and I’m in the same boat as you. I’m such a go getter but the lack of direction, leadership and growth has made me doubt my own capabilities at times. The support system isn’t that great too. Everything is up in the air all the time.
OP, are you me lol? I'm a go-getter too and I feel the exact same way. With the recent email from GM, I think we're better off looking for other job opportunities. Even layoffs are up in the air and there is no direction. I'm still around a year, but I'll start applying for other jobs. This vagueness is something to look out for during interviews (although I was promised good things during my interview at MDT). Maybe it's because MDT is a huge company and red tape is expected. My previous company was a start-up environment and I made a lot of impact.

Is it just me but given the history with British in India
I heard they are closing whole Sunnyvale branch and moving to Ireland. So you might get away with layoff
I know l read about it don’t work there or for that division but I can say for sure every OU regardless of how we performed is on the same boat
