Data Scientist laid off in May, got two offers now. TC is not my first priority. In 2-5 years, I’d like to get back to a tech company as a DS or DS manager, so I care more about which job will be more helpful to land the next role. Walmart pays significantly more, but my concern is the confusing tile - it’s called manager but actually is a IC role, so potentially an issue if I apply for a DS role in 1-2 years. Also, Walmart is not a tech company, so I’m not sure about it’s reputation for HMs in tech. Any advice and insight is appreciated. TC: 0 YoE: 7
What was your TC before?
I interviewed for senior manager business analysis and tc they offered was 170k for Arkansas. So your tc is way better
Walmart TC is for NY and eBay for Austin so offers seem comparable. eBay annual stock refreshers are generally better than those of Walmart. Why isn’t eBay offering an equity grant? Did you try negotiating using your Walmart offer?
The title does not matter, there are other also other companies that add the manager title to ICs above a certain level like Capital One. You can always just say "Senior Engineer" on your resume instead of manager anyways.
For the title just call yourself a Business Analytics Manager if you want it IC. No different from product manager, program manager. It's not automatically assumed that they are a people manager. Writing it as Manager, Busines... is what makes it appear like a people manager role.
Thanks for the insight!
Walmart isn’t a tech company but eBay is? You aren’t going to the top retailer in the world to work the cash register. They have serious scale. And eBay isn’t exactly the bastion of technical innovation…
Title arbitrage always works Go for Walmart
Bruh… Go to Walmart
I work for Walmart Connect (ads), and I’ve had a positive experience. It’s not a tech company, but the reason they’re in SF and NY is that they want a legit tech enabled business. Not sure what your team is, but if you work on interesting work, you’ll have no issues getting interviews after a year or two here. I’d take the Walmart offer honestly.
Thanks for your insight! I heard Walmart Connect is pretty amazing. The team I’m interviewing with is e-commerce, so guess it’s pretty tech-focused too
Is there even a choice???
Look at the locations.
I’m seriously debating since TC is not the biggest priority. Why do you think Walmart is a better choice?
