I work for Applied Materials a semiconductor to a manufacturer in Santa Clara. With the rising rents and fuel prices and just inflation in general I really fear if I can even provide for my family. I have a 125k base pay after 5 years of PhD and 3 years of work experience. I recently got to know how expensive child Care is in America and I don't really think we can even afford having a child I feel stuck and my compensation is not going to rise anytime soon given I am in the hardware industry
You are most likely able to get paid more if you’re willing to move companies. What is your job function? Production engineer?
Process engineer
Are you tied to your geographic area because of family, etc.?
If moving is an option for you come to Albuquerque. Lots of defense and national labs jobs here.
I am an international and i cant get in those companies due to ITAR
Oh ok. We have Intel here with a huge manufacturing facility. Looks like they are doing a 3-4 billion expansion.
Does your partner work? I would start looking into jobs in cheaper states.
She cant work as she is an international non stem major
She can try as a research assistant or coordinator at research hospitals or CROs. Minimum eligibility is undergrad and salary could be around $40-50K.
Get a remote job and move to low COL country.
Do you get any stocks?
I did but i got 40k stocks when it was 140$ and now its 96$
Same exact fear. TC 254k at current prices. I think it‘a a fear that a lot of men have.
FAANG have hardware too.
FAANG if you want to stay in bay area. Intel has many positions for process engineer in Arizona, Oregon and New Mexico. Lam in Oregon - AMAT competitor so recruiter will probably reach out to you. Micron, Globalfoundries, Samsung, veeco, tsmc (was hiring for AZ fab a while back). The above are companies which will hire most process engineers. And there are some smaller companies based on your speciality. Work life balance is usually bad for process engineers so choose your poison. Arizona is also big city but lower state tax. Many people are moving there for opportunities in tech. It has quite a bit of process engineer opportunities- to state a few- Intel, asm, medtronic .

Lots of layoffs this week!
How many kids do you have? Why isn’t your partner working?
She is a psychology major from India.
Can she take care of the child if she’s not working? (That’s how it usually works)
