Hi Blind Community, I feel so helpless right now. I hate my job to the core and I have no interest in working my current job. I am looking to move into PM roles but I constantly get rejected citing less experience. I got rejected from Yahoo and Amazon after 6 rounds. Other rejects include Sezzle, Businessolver, 2U, Paylocity, Cengage Learning after 1-2 rounds. Is this expected for someone who graduated last year with less than one year work experience. I have tried referrals at big firms and I didn’t get call backs but people on blind were very courteous to refer me. What should I do? I feel so bad for these rejections and I feel I could’ve done much better in those interviews. I have panel round for HBO Max coming up. All the smart people on blind, please help me #product
Is it possible to switch teams until you get an offer?
When a company says NO .. its means look for the "Next Oppourunity" . I know rejection sucks because for one role there would be many people interviewing .. keep husstling and you will eventually make it . Good luck
What are you doing now?
Don't worry about it. You will gradually reach there. I would say compromise on the brand for your passion. Sometimes it takes a bit of patience of few years to reach big ones. So life doesn't end here pal. Take a startup or mid level company. Keep your prep up . Problem with new folks .( No offense ) With little experience they wish to get big pm roles which needs extensive responsibilities. Atleast your demonstrated pm experience with mid level or small companies will convince big ones. Plan . Patience . If you can't control your Anxiety with interviews. I wonder what pm you would be when in release or revenues goes down and you would be blamed. Trust the process . What's meant for you will come it. Accept the pace.
Thank you, I agree, I need to keep prepping while applying and trying elsewhere
I agree. OP keep interviewing, consider the rejections as practice for better opportunities. Patience is the key here. I know how rejections hurt. Take a couple of days break, get back and keep the momentum going.
You are not alone :/
Have you tried for Associate PM roles at smaller companies? Or product analyst roles that might lead into a PM role? I’ve seen a lot of those posted recently for folks with less than 2 YOE
I’ll check out product analyst roles, good suggestion because I’ve sql and analytics skills. I am still applying to Amazon though because the recruiter told me I’m not a good fit for the role but I am a good fit at Amazon
If you are a swe stick with that role for a couple years before moving to PM
Amazon hires people right out of school for PM with no experience. If you got an interview and made it a couple of rounds the problem is your interviewing skills not your experience. You aren’t selling yourself well enough. How are your formulating your answers? How are you talking about product strategy? Go study interviewing for the companies you want to join and apply again. Good luck.
Yes, I agree, I could’ve done much better on the Amazon interview. I’ll keep prepping and applying
When they are asking you “Tell me about a time when…” make sure you have examples filled with product strategy and knowledge. If you stocked shelves tell about a time you did product research to determine the best place to put bananas, talk about the banana placement launch, results, and impact on the business etc. Fill in the gaps in your experience with knowledge.
@OP don’t feel bad about Sezzle. They had layoffs today!!
I am sorry, are you safe? I joined amazon as a product manager now, so let me know if you need referral

PM ? As in product ? How do you expect to be effective in product management with less than a year’s experience?
But people do get jobs with lesser experience, I know it’s hard but possible
You’ve gotten rejected multiple times by tier-3 companies. Take a hard look and see if you really have the skills for the job. If not, work towards it. Instant gratification won’t help you.
