i'm proud to pay taxes

* small town boy * veteran * public school, public university * gi bill -> advanced degree * received gov funding for a startup venture * have tried my hand living in a few other countries * now have much more money than i need sure it has it's faults, but this truly is the best country. it's why people walk 3000 miles, or study for 18 hours per day for years or apply to lotteries to get here. and if you dont realize the central role the USA played (and american taxpayers) played in building the tech landscape you see today via public works, defense spending, funding universities and researchers... then seriously just quit your job and leave the country whining about taxes is american as apple pie. sure we could argue about efficiency, blah blah blah... but look at the track record of the USA and tell me your tax dollars aren't worth it USA USA USA!

Capital One iIgnoreDms Apr 1

Can you pay my taxes then?

Meta ThatSucks Apr 1

Might be April's fools joke... With that said, everyone who whines about taxes thinks they did everything on their own, when we know that's not the case.

Like what did I not do on my own? I did not work my way through college to not have debt? I didnt work 80 hours on my business to provide value to the community? How much is my fair share? Would be nice to have a choice. "Oh I should leave the country if I dont like it?" I have, and I retired with 40 good years ahead of me and I get to choose what I work on now.

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

which country do you live in now? can you explain why it's better? fyi this is not an april fools joke and my life summary is unique enough to dox me (hence left out some bits)

Google yemsg Apr 1

Agreed, fuck y'all who don't wanna pay taxes and support a higher quality of life for others

New
ismart Apr 1

Um fuck you dude. Come to the country I left for and take my hard earned money. Sure is nice to live in a 5k sqft house and do what I want because Im not taxed to death.

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

your post in confusing; which country are you talking about and which way did you go (leave for the US or did you leave the US)

You’re so right and people who have been born and raised here don’t appreciate it anymore!

New
ismart Apr 1

Thats because you cant retire like you could back in the day. Everything is too expensive and they just tax you 50%.

New
WWDJ Apr 1

I’m sorry but you don’t see the whole picture. Everything is so expensive these days, it’s expensive because we stopped producing most of our goods and products. By the way this is a direct result for what I’ve said above people don’t appreciate where they live and what they do.

Microsoft rio bravo Apr 1

The US became a superpower *in spite* of taxes, not *thanks to*.

Amazon TFcC67 Apr 1

How was that military funded to go secure trade routes and oil? Your donations?

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

USA! USA! USA! i posted my life's journey... what is yours? why are you still in the US if it's so bad?

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

also it's hilarious when people don't understand that the gov and unions are the only counterweights to corporate power, but you do you simping for zuck or jobs' corpse

Google Midikiner Apr 1

When something works in America, that’s because there is money in it working When something doesn’t work in America, that’s because there is money in it not working The latter is where your taxes are basically corruption payments

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

are there countries that spend tax dollars more efficiently? look at the america's track record of funding innovation. (and if you're a libertarian who thinks we should drown the gov in the bathtub, then please stay out of this thread with your child-like understanding of the world lol)

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

that is to say, i agree with the basic gist of your post... but it's a platitude and true of virtually any country

Apple learncodin Apr 1

feel like trolling, but these days, you never know if the Dems are truly that idiotic

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 1

troll? sorry my bridge fell down and now i need to take up a collection to re-build... oh wait that's what taxes are for

Microsoft Hey-Zeus Apr 2

Cool, you can pay mine too then. Cause I think it's bullshit how my money is squandered on so much waste, fraud, abuse, and unnecessary grift.

Oracle uSAD28 OP Apr 2

you can't simply complain about this without looking at america's track record. just look at the research side of our federally-funded university system (yes, even at private schools like harvard most professors are expected to "pay their own way" via federal grants... you want a nice lab? then start writing letters to uncle sam!). this system attracts the best of the best from every country in the world and has created incredible value since wwii it's not even debatable. (though i fear china will soon surpass us if we don't keep it up) does the teaching-side of the house have some problems? oh of course! but you can't shout FWA!!! without comparing to the private sector. and the US gov actually puts a lot of effort into measuring and combating FWA due to the work of thousands of faceless employees who devote their lives to improving the country. let's look at medicare, which has ~7% improper payment rate (aka fraud). the us gao estimates that fraud rate accounts up to 10% of all health expenditures... which implies that the fraud rate for private insurers is the same order of magnitude and probably statistically equal to the medicare fraud rate. there's going to be fraud, waste and abuse in any large system, it's inevitable and grift?! grift! ok if you compare to central europe then maybe we're not doing so great on the corruption front, but there's only a small list of countries that are less corrupt than the US (and those countries are much smaller and much more homogeneous)
