yesterday I met a Meta employee who said he was hired as a level 5 (“senior”) data scientist with a PhD and no industry work experience he also said he was promoted to level 6 (“staff”) within two years, and promoted again to level 7 (“senior staff”) just two years after that this career growth seems absolutely insane to me. i’m having a hard time believing it. has anyone else heard similar stories of such fast career growth at Meta? meta does have uniquely fast career growth, but their levels don’t seem to necessarily translate well to other companies, e.g. stories of double down level when applying to google
I know a high performing E6 who is probably close to 7 promo with 4 YOE
My friend joined Meta as E3 (undergraduate degree), he gets promoted to E7 (Sr Staff) within 4.5 years (Instagram)
I moved up 2 levels up to Staff in 2.5 years with TC almost 2/3rd yours. My team was huge too, and only a masters degree when I joined. It's not that uncommon. Career growth among the population could be modelled as a bell curve. Obviously there will be lot of people on the higher percentiles too. Some with even more insane outlier like growth. In FAANG (now MAMAA) companies, that have top tier talent, it's expected to have people who are exceptional, especially if they get good projects to show impactful results . Pretty sure you'll find lot of people like that in your company. Those who can't make it, if insecure, will always resort to rationalizations to feel better and assume things about those who are talented, but that is super pedestrian. Just something I've personally noticed
"Top talent"
I feel you OP, Apple has insanely slow growth. Time to move to Meta
Maybe PhD helped (indirectly). These people have incredible work ethics and are quite smart.
Is meta hiring?!
Anything is possible in tech. You just need to be on the right team at the right time. Of course you also need to be very good. But just being great does not translate to fast growth unless you have the luck factor of being in the right high visibility project where you get to show your skills
I've accomplished things that most people never get to do in their entire careers but I've always been at companies that have absolutely no path to growth. My trajectory in terms of accomplishments & responsibilities have been nontraditional. Any help on how to market myself would be really appreciated! How would market your profile? (Please don't state the obvious point of moving companies. I'm hoping to hear how can I convince people that I deserve a higher level even though I've been working past it.)
By showing that other companies want you and using it as leverage. No way around it. If you don't ask for a promotion they will stay silent thinking you're satisfied
Most companies down level me by justifying that I don't that the required number of YOE. They ignore the actual responsibilities.
Yes meta has insanely fast career growth, I know some of my former colleagues who are getting insanely promoted in a very short span of time
That's insanely insane... Insane
