Hello, One of my junior friends at school has received full-time offers from two companies - Mathworks- some edg role and Wayfair- labs program, both in Boston area as he is also in that area. He needs some help deciding upon the two. Also, being international student, he seemed confused about labs program at wayfair and certainity. I thought this would be a good platform to know opinions from actual developers working at these companies Anyone willing to share some insights? Thanks Edit 1: thanks for responses, looking for more responses. Edit 2: another doubt he has is regarding mathwork role, it also includes some support work. What's take on that @mathwork devs. Edit 3: another parameter to consider: tech. growth
I would go with Wayfair (don’t know much about how good it will be for internationals). Matlab is pretty much non-existent in when it comes to deep learning. It looks like more and more people are going to move towards Python. I don’t know about Simulink though.
Labs is a 3 month long interview so don't be surprised if some of the folks are let go at the end. For the sure thing, I'd also recommend Mathworks.
This is not really true. Nobody has failed labs in over a year
Three month long interview! What do they do? I interviewed at DeepMind and it was clear to me that it would be probably 1.5-2 month long process
Wayfairs tech leadership has never written a line of code in their life (CTO is ex consultant).
Do you post this to every Wayfair post? You can find Conine's commits.
He isn’t CTO...
There is definitely some support work in EDG and that does expose you to the products and how it’s used. This helped me at least when I transitioned into a development role later.
Tc for the offers?
Around 100k, not exactly sure
Thanks for your input. I was trying to figure out peoples thoughts on this in my own post. Someone gave a helpful response about getting promotions, but I always thought it’s easier to go to another company even at the same level. They make it hard for someone that actually wants to stay in the same place
I meant they make it hard to stay at the same company. Agreed, I would have moved to Seattle or SF earlier in my career
Labs program is very easy and No one has failed it more than a year. You get to pick your team at the end of first project. You get to do full stack engineering or big data or frontend only etc

Wayfair has raised it's interview bar so the failure rate of Labs is now pretty low. That being said, there is a non-zero chance your friend can fail Labs so I'd go with Mathworks (assuming they want to stay in US and be less worried).
It’s practically a zero chance. Nobody has failed labs in over a year now
